[cobirds] Sterling CBC Preliminary Results

The blizzard conditions on Wednesday morning forced us to move the Sterling Count to Thursday.  This made it difficult in that a combinations of sickness and schedule conflicts left us with only six individuals to do the count.  Bill Kaempfer, Todd Deininger and Kathy Mihm-Dunning joined me and a couple of Sterling locals.  Everyone worked hard and the result was a tie for the second highest number of species, 73 versus a high of 74, and the second highest in the total individuals, 26,600+.  Several weather factors worked in our favor.  North Sterling Reservoir still had a lot of open water.  In addition the three to four inches of snow in the fields on Wednesday pushed many of the birds to the roadside where we could see them.

Even more rewarding was the observation of three new species for the count: Western Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, and Vesper Sparrow.  And yes we had redpolls too!

Thanks Bill, Todd, Kathy, Kent and Cassie.
