[cobirds] Philadelphia and Blue-headed Vireos

Since it seems to be no shortage of either of these vireos this fall in Colorado, I hope people will submit documentation to the CBRC for each sighting.  Maybe these two species will be removed from the CBRC Review list at some point, if all of them are documented.  Both of them seem to be regular enough, at least down here in Pueblo.  I have almost finished documenting all of my Blue-headed and Philadelphia Vireos from this fall, so far.

[cobirds] Boulder County: White-throated Sparrow, Red-necked Grebe

Hello, Birders.



This morning, Saturday, Sept. 29th, Hannah and I found a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the southeast corner of Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County. (This is equivalent to the north shore of rapidly rising Waneka Lake.) There are gazillions of seed-bearing weeds and White-crowned Sparrows in there. I imagine the place will be attractive to granivorous birds throughout the fall.



And right around noon today, Hannah and Andrew and I found an even 100 grebes at Lagerman Reservoir: 98 Western Grebes, 1 Pied-billed Grebe, and a nice RED-NECKED GREBE. Also, dozens of bluebirds in the general vicinity, most or all of them Mountain Bluebirds. But I wouldn't be surprised if other species are in the area.

[cobirds] Fremont County - Lewis's Woodpecker and Pinyon Jays

Today – driving back from Canon City; my wife and I had a Lewis’s Woodpecker 2 miles south of Hwy 50 on CR 9, fly up to a telephone pole.

 

On CR 11, at or near the Fremont/Teller Co line (not really sure where that line is on CR 11, so it could have been in Teller Co) we had 8 Pinyon Jays.

 

Also, as we got home in Teller Co (at 8,500’ in Ponderosa, Doug Fir, Spruce habitat) miles from any water other than the small recirculating pond/stream in my back yard; we had about ~50 Common Grackles making one heckuva racket in the trees around my small artificial pond. They stuck around for an hour and left. While I have had one or two grackles visit me from time to time over the years, certainly the first time for such a group. Specifically, here are the four records of common grackles at my house over 25 years; only 1 each time!

Teller County - 8500' - Montane Woodlands

 

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 9/29 (Phily Vireos and Yt Warbler)

I found 74 species of birds today, while walking (five and a half hours) along the Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam, east to the Pueblo Nature Center in Pueblo, Pueblo County.

 

Highlights in order of when I saw them:

South Side of the Arkansas River:

Eastern Phoebe - 1 West of Valco Ponds parking lot

Red-naped Sapsucker - 1 West of Valco Ponds parking lot

Warbling Vireo - 1 West of Valco Ponds parking lot

Townsend's Warbler - 3 West of Valco Ponds parking lot

Lazuli Bunting - 1 West of Valco Ponds parking lot

Black Phoebe - 2 East of Valco Ponds parking lot

North Side of the Arkansas River:

Western Scrub-Jay - 2 West of the Pueblo Nature Center

Mountain Chickadee - 1 West of the Pueblo Nature Center

Philadelphia Vireo - 2 together West of the Pueblo Nature Center

Townsend's Warbler - 4 West side of the Osprey Picnic Area

Yellow-throated Warbler - 1 West side of the Osprey Picnic Area

[cobirds] banding report fo Clear Springs Ranch for Saturday 9/29/12

Cobirders:

Saturday 9/29/12 was bright clear calm morning for banding at Clear Springs Ranch (CSR).*

The weather was too nice J

We banded 21 new birds of 7 different species.

We had 5 recaptures:  4 from this Fall, local plus one GWCS originally banded 9/25/11 as a HY U was a AHY male on recap

Our list:    

 

Black-capped Chickadee, 1              

Chipping Sparrow, 3

Gambel’s White-crowned Sparrow, 5

Lincoln’s Sparrow, 3

Orange-crowned Warbler, 5

Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 1

Spotted Towhee, 3

*Clear Springs Ranch is an area managed by Colorado Springs Utilities, about

10 miles south of Colorado Springs.

Take I25 to exit 123, follow signs to parking lot east of side of freeway.

It is open on a limited basis (walk-in only) to the general public.

[cobirds] CBR, El Paso Co, Saturday

Hi COBirders,

full report to follow.

SLOW again. Only 11 new birds banded. Most often seen this morning were accipiter fly-overs - maybe 2-3 Sharp-shinned Hawks, and 2-3 more Cooper's Hawks. That may have kept other birds from flying out to the nets.  It was also "Old Friends Day" with recaptures of one of the Wood Thrush from 9/20, and one of the Black-throated Blue Warbler males from 9/26, and about 10 other birds.  So where are these guys hiding, since nobody seems to find them the other days?

Still catching Wilson's Warblers, an Orange-crowned Warbler, and a few Gambell's White-crowned Sparrows. Several Townsend's Solitaires, Sapsuckers, and flickers were in the grove - including one Yellow-shafter Flicker male. We saw again what might be a hatch-year Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - but since we can't catch it we're not positive yet.

Good birds, just not many of them.
