[cobirds] HARLEQUIN DUCK Eagle

First up a note on access. As our birding community grows and the number of people chases increases it's more important than ever to be respectful of our environment when chasing rarities. The pond in question is heavily signed no trespassing, community members only. There is a vantage point from a public road. Remember that respect while birding preserves access to not only sites but encourages the posting rare birds. I was on the fence about publicizing this bird, but hopefully we can share this experience and future megas.

A female plumage Harlequin Duck was present on the western pond in Dotsero, Eagle County. Just before sunset today. By eBird the first record since 2001 and 4th overall.

Viewing from the pin on the attached screenshot is right in front of one of the no trespass signs and gives scope views of most of the pond. This point is just in front of a community building. I found the bird from here which will yield plenty of identifiable looks.

I would imagine she spends much of her time on the river and may roost on the pond. So other river access in the area may be a good idea. Rafting trip anyone?

I did ask a homeowner for permission to get record shots of this rarity, to be posted to eBird. Please respect this communities rules if chasing.

Good luck!
