[cobirds] White-throated Sparrows singing the NEW SONG, Greenlee Preserve, Boulder Co.

Hey, all.

In one of the more remarkable developments in birding in recent years, White-throated Sparrows have suddenly started singing a new song. The past few days, the two or possibly more White-throated Sparrows at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder Co., have started singing, and they are singing this new song! I haven't been able to get a good audio recording yet.

If you're like me and grew up with White-throated Sparrow song in a different part of the ABA Area, this new song is really quite startling. And beautiful. You'll recognize it as Zonotrichia song, but it's really distinct from the way White-throated Sparrows sang in the not-so-distant past.

The birds seem to be most reliable right around the feeding station. If I may opine: Playing a recording to try to get the birds to vocalize is recommended against; while playback works great in getting birds to come out and make sounds, it also has a way of making birds sound weird. Just listen out there. You'll hear it soon enough.

Here is some information on the new song, including good audio:
