Re: [cobirds] Sound ID

in the past i was able to record bird song using the merlin app  or birdnet app on my Samsung phone, send the recording to my email and ultimately attach the bird ID recording to an ebird checklist accessed on my desktop computer.   recently,  for some reason, the  apps capture the bird song, and ID the bird, however,  when i finally attach to checklist  there is virtually no sound recording -   i.e., the attachment works, but the  checklist media recording  is so quiet it is worthless.    i recall a youtube video by CFO (i think....)  for the Merlin app, although i can't locate it.   can somebody please send me the link for the youtube video?  or a link to a good youtube video about this topic.   maybe i can get this straightened out on my own without too much back and forth and people's time.

and to be fair, for this particular ID task, the birdnet app, although 'clunky',  did work better than Merlin, although Merlin has now really improved the sound ID feature.

technology: all microphones and speakers are turned up to full volume, fyi.

lastly,  I don't keep checklists on my phone, i just don't have the accurate field ID skills, so, I do it old fashioned way;    i keep a notepad list and take lots of photos in the field, then at home work on bird ID, and finally process the checklist (species and media) from my  desktop.

It's true that Merlin Sound ID will get better with time. Right now it only recognizes 458 species. It's also likely to work better with songs than with calls, and it works better when you are in an area with cell service. If you have no service, it can't check its list of suggestions against what's expected to be in your area at that time.

And Chuck is right to recommend thinking of it as "Merlin Sound Suggestions." In fact, the word the Merlin team uses for the bird names that pop up is "predictions."

But it is a pretty cool feat of coding, and I highly recommend getting out and testing it for yourself.

I've avoided Twitter, so doesn't work for me.

Thanks for the great info on the backgrounds of BirdNet and Merlin. I know that these will get better in time.

Is there a way to let the Merlin-ites know of the false/problematic ID of the Pine Warbler (in my case), so that they can use that feedback to tweak things in subsequent releases?

I ran into Andrew Spencer and Nathan Pieplow out on the Pawnee a couple of weeks ago and Andrew basically said (if I understood correctly) that Birdnet and Merlin were different teams of Cornell etc. researchers working on the same question separately. He said Merlin should be more accurate than Birdnet and will also get better with time. It only recognizes a limited number of species currently and I've had it suggest crazy things way out of range. Eventually it will be amazing and I'm already impressed.

I used Bird Net too, before Merlin.  I agree about Merlin's interface being a lot more user-friendly.    I wasn't sure how to do the upload, though, so your email was helpful.

BirdNet says Dark-Eyed Junco, with Chipping Sparrow second, and Flammulated Owl third.  I'll go with DEJU!

Interesting, that BirdNet was (is?) associated with Cornell, too . . . and that they'd give such different results!

I've been using the Merlin Bird Sound app since it was first released in beta. I've found that while it's amazing, I've also seen several false IDs, particularly when there is some background noise such as wind.

You also might try to upload the audio here, which is the API behind Bird NET, which is an app I was using prior to Merlin (which I've now switched over to Merlin because it's a lot more user friendly).

Also, you might upload your sound somewhere that makes it a little easier for others to view, such as an eBird checklist (which as the ID is in question, upload it as Passerine sp. initially).

COBirders,

Yesterday, I participated in David Hallock's Indian Peaks Breeding Bird Count. My "area" was the Woodland Lake Trail (accessed from Hessie Trailhead, near Nederland). I kept hearing a bird that I couldn't quite identify. It didn't sound quite like a Chipping Sparrow or Dark-eyed Junco, so I thought I'd try the new Merlin Bird Sound app (which is amazing, I must say). Without hesitation, or providing any other suggestions, it identified the sound/bird as a Pine Warbler. Since eBird designates that bird as "rare", I don't want to say that that's what it was, solely on the basis of the call.

I have a recording that I'm happy to share, if someone would like to help me (and Merlin) make the right (pardon the pun) "call".

Thanks so much!

[cobirds] Gulls/Fort Collins

Hello everyone,

I've been seeing a type of gull fly over SE Fort Collins for a few nights in a row now. They're heading south, and seem to be eating insects or something higher up (can't get a good look at them). Does anyone know what they are? I'm guessing they're migrating south somewhere?

Thanks!

[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year hits 250 species!

All,
I relocated a Northern Waterthrush at, where else, Chatfield State Park, yesterday, Monday Aug 30!  This was Green Big Year bird #250! I thought 250 was a reasonable goal with all going on in life with work and kids, but I didn't think I'd hit it with FOUR months and a day left in the year!

The bird was in JeffCo. It was later found by another birder across the delta by the heronry overlook in douglas county. Presumably it was the same bird as the bird I had wasn't relocated by some birders at the JeffCo spot (see eBird list).

Now that I've hit my initial lofty goal of 250 species (aiming higher now), would you consider a pledge or a donation to the Joe Roller Memorial Research Grant? No better time than now to motivate my weary legs, sore knees and back! Click the link (scroll to the bottom at the link). All funds support bird research in Colorado through CFO. We are getting closer to raising $30,000 (!!!) to support the next generation of ornithologists (once I get to 270 species, if I can get there!). https://cobirds.org/CFO/Grants/

Thank you for all the donations and pledges this year! This is simply amazing! It takes a team to do this! What an amazing journey.

Blog posts coming, soon I hope.

Thank you!!

[cobirds] Yuma county --- Fallout in the Hale area 8/29

COBirders,

On my way back into Colorado I birded Foster Grove, Hale Crossroads, and Hale Ponds. Here is the same map that Bryan provided but with the green circle in the area of Hale Crossroads (I think):

As I arrived at Foster Grove, it was 56 degrees and completely overcast. It was not super birdy but it did produce a CASSIN'S VIREO, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and an AMERICAN REDSTART as highlights.

The next stop was Hale Crossroads. This is not a very big area but I spent over three hours at this location. Not only were there several rarities but the local birds also had family groups all over which just added to the experience. The highlights for me were:

24 Red-headed Woodpeckers
3 Olive-sided Flycatchers
1 Alder Flycatcher
6 Great Crested Flycatchers
4 Cassin's Vireos
7 Red-eyed Vireos
9 Baltimore Orioles
3 Ovenbirds
3 Black-and-white Warblers
1 Nashville Warbler
2 Mourning Warblers (1ad, 1 imm.)
6 Common Yellowthroat
16 American Redstarts
9 Yellow Warblers
2 Chestnut-sided Warblers
2 Townsend's Warblers
1 Black-throated Green Warbler
1 Canada Warbler
8 Wilson's Warbler

It was amazing in there and I wonder what all I missed.

The last stop was at Hale Ponds, I only really worked the area near the southwestern-most pond and right the by the river. I probably should have worked the river more but I as running out of time. Highlights were:

2 Olive-sided Flycatchers
4 Great Crested Flycatchers
3 Cassin's Vireos
3 Red-eyed Vireos
1 Black-and-white Warbler
4 Common Yellowthroats
13 American Redstarts
1 Blackburnian Warbler
3 Yellow Warblers
3 Wilson's Warblers

Very fun day on the eastern edge of the state!

Wandering around Weld County this weekend ...

Just now a Red-breasted Nuthatch appeared in our yard for probably the second or third time in our 20 years here. We had Wilson's Warbler (2) here on Saturday being chased by two Loggerhead Shrike during the morning--no kills recorded as far as we know. :-)

13 Cattle Egret at CR 41/46 pond area east of Stewart's Pond yesterday.

Saturday ...
  • Windsor Lake had two Forster's Tern
  • Windsor Reservoir had 2-3 Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs
  • Woods Lake Snowy and Great Egret
  • Cozzens Lake is open for shorebird business flock of 60-80 shorebirds including Wilson's Phalarope, Baird's, Solitary, Stilt, and Pectoral Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, Long-billed Dowitcher, both yellowlegs, other birds still needing ID. 193 American White Pelican loafing.
  • Galeton Ponds at CR 61/74 is open for shorebird business. 169 Franklin's Gull. Black-necked Stilt, Long-billed Dowitcher, Greater Yellowlegs, Semipalmated and Baird's Sandpiper.
  • CR 59 marsh ducks only
  • Loloff Reservoir saw it was full of birds did not have time to scan.
Sunday ...
  • Trip toward CR 124 pond had Vesper, Lark, Brewer's and Chipping Sparrow, Lark Bunting (only a few as compared to two weekends ago (100s and 100s)), Say's Phoebe, Western Wood-Pewee (6), Loggerhead Shrike, Sage Thrasher and expected raptors.
  • 124 pond is open for shorebird business ... Greater Yellowlegs, Black Tern (3) and a few yet to be IDed "peeps".
In Vermont last week I got lifer Scarlet Tanager at our hotel. Also, Cedar Waxwing there are like House Sparrow here ... all over.

[cobirds] Plenty of Poorwills; field trip opportunity 9/1

With about 3.5 weeks until the Common Poorwill departs the Front Range foothills to be south, poorwills are pretty plentiful right now. On a 8/28 evening DFO field trip to the hogbacks at Ken Caryl Ranch we heard at least 17 poorwills calling over a half mile walk, and I heard 14 calling last evening 8/29 at another half mile segment in the hogbacks. I heard five calling from my home on 8/29, in the distance calling also from the hogbacks. I hear one now and again from home, but five at once was a lot.

Space is available on another DFO evening outing I will lead to Ken Caryl to seek poorwills on Wednesday Sept 1. Details and registration are here:

[cobirds] Salisbury Equestrian Park Pond - Parker (Douglas County)

I have not been able to get out much the last few months, but did take a quick trip out to Salisbury Equestrian Park Pond in Parker this AM. This location has been quite good for fall shore birds past years, when water levels have been appropriate. Currently the water level is too high for shore birds to feed. I did have flyover Lesser Yellowlegs and a Baird's, but I am not certain where they flew from. Additionally I was dismayed that the park has 100% cleared out all shrubs, bushes and vegetation around the edges of the entire pond. I don't know the reasoning. In the past those bushes had been decent for sparrows and warblers. The only noteworthy bird was a single early Canvasback hanging with the Mallards.

 [GO2]

i think we need to specify what half time means - is that 20 hours a week or 30 hours a week? part time is usually considered less than 30 hours a week. that makes a difference to people if they make an average of $28/hour (20 hours per week) or $19/hr (30 hours per week). I would phrase it as "Half-time (average of 20hours/week), W9 contractor..."

The Project and Event Manager is responsible for getting the jobs completed, not for counting hours.  This is more of a half-time salaried position, than an hourly position.  I would predict that the person will work more than 20 hours a week on average.  We will probably need to help them not overwork and to seek to get more volunteer help as needed. The person is ultimately responsible for managing how much time they work for CFO. Someone with the business skills to fulfill this job is likely not coming from an "hourly" mentality, but from a salaried perspective.

I agree with leaving this as "Half-time" without any extra understanding.

here again I would phrase it as "likely slightly more than 20 hours a week on average Oct to May and likely less than 20 hours a week on average May 2022 through Sept 2022"

And definitely will be busy Feb and March - I see those as major behind the scenes months of registration prep for SURE march. In fact Jan might be the slowest in that time period

Plus the way i split it, its about 6 months of busier and 6 months of not as busy.

If we know this person is a contractor and have already decided they understand the life of a contractor (take the famine with the flood), then we don't need to say this.

If however we feel like this is important to have in the job announcement because we think it will deter folks from applying for the job who won't have that type of availability, I am fine with saving everyone that time.

I agree that this doesn't need to be stated.

[cobirds] Bullocks Oriole in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

Hello Fellow Birders,

This afternoon a female Bullock's Oriole paid a quick visit to my little townhouse yard near Holly & Arapahoe in west Centennial.  She perched atop the shepherd's crook for about 2 minutes before moving on.  Hadn't seen one here in quite a while.

Re: [cobirds] What Bryan was saying . . .

Adding to the thread "Bryan Got it Right" - at Clear Spring Ranch (El Paso Co) this morning the strong overnight wind blew out the big numbers of birds I banded yesterday - but blew in a new contingent of unusual migrants - including Ovenbird (my 3rd here in 10 years),  Cassin's Vireo (my 5th here), and several MacGillivray's, Yellow, and Wilson's Warblers. The 110 Chipping Sparrows I had yesterday was down to about 30 today! Not big numbers arriving, but some good ones.

Thanks, Bryan, for the heads-up,

[cobirds]

In a short loop around the block in my neighborhood in Security, CO this morning, I observed 8 Mississippi Kites born this season being fed by at least 5 adults.  The young I saw are all new fliers, having fledged within the last two weeks, and are being very vocal calling for parental attention, making them relatively easy to locate.  If this year is like others, they will likely migrate in the next two weeks.  If anyone wants to see them, now is a good time.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Shorebird Workshop field trip report

No. Has there ever been a White-rumped Sandpiper in fall migration in Colorado? According to Birds Eye, there have been several eBird  reports this month from further east in the Central Flyway so it seems theoretically possible but I'm not familiar with any documented sightings in Colorado other than spring migrants in May and June.

I led the shorebird workshop field trip to Jumbo Reservoir today, for a great group of 9 registrants (you know who you are). Shorebirding was slow (just 12 species between Jumbo and Red Lion SWA). So we ended the day at Prewitt Reservoir south mudflats which hosted 19 species of shorebirds including two rarities: Short-billed Dowitcher and Buff-breasted Sandpiper (photo below). We had twenty species of shorebirds on the day, as well as some nice land birds at Tamarack Ranch SWA including Bell's Vireo and two Ovenbirds, and several Mississippi Kites in Sterling.

[cobirds] Prewitt Reservoir Shorebird Bonanza (Washington County)

Hello CO Birders:

I had the distinct pleasure of leading a CFO Shorebird ID workshop to Prewitt Reservoir in Washington County this morning and we enjoyed a shorebird spectacle. We tallied 20 species, some in remarkable numbers.

Baird's Sandpipers and Stilt Sandpipers were there by the hundreds.

Noteworthy species were Black-bellied Plover (1), Semipalmated Plover (4), Red-necked Phalarope (2), Sanderling (1), and Short-billed Dowitcher (1)

The complete list can be viewed here:

The second image of Semipalmated Plover in the eBird checklist has a few other species in it. See how many species you can discover.

Good birding,
Eric
