First run of the morning was exciting because we caught a Blue Grosbeak family (the mom and two young'uns; dad was nowhere to be found). Otherwise, the day was relatively quiet. Only caught 24 new birds, although we ended with 49 total because of many recaps. We've banded 379 Wilson's Warblers so far this season and some of them stick around for several days, so there is no surprise that we are now catching many again - some having put on the fat they need for migration and some not. Today we had 18 to re-evaluate. Here is a breakdown of the new birds today:
-- Downy Woodpecker 1, banded in 2018
Warbling Vireo 1
Gray Catbird 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Townsend's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 11
Green-tailed Towhee 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1
Blue Grosbeak 3
We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through October 13. We are opening nets at 6:40 and should have birds back at the station by 7:20. We will close nets most days at 11:40, although we are closing earlier as needed due to the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.
Come visit!
