[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/20-21/19

Friday through Sunday, the Bird Conservancy has been hosting the annual meeting of the Western Bird Banding Association at Barr Lake.  It has been a great opportunity to share and learn from colleagues doing similar work in other states.  These were slow days at the banding station, but there was a silver lining......we had time to look more closely at some individual birds and discuss with the experts various techniques for aging and sexing some difficult species.

Friday was especially slow, a combination of few birds around, wind and then heat.  Only banded 9 birds (plus catching another 9 banded earlier in the season).  Highlight was a Brown Thrasher:

House Wren 1
Hermit Thrush 1
Brown Thrasher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 5

Today (Saturday) was an improvement, with 16 new birds.  As reported earlier by volunteer Megan Miller, we started the morning with a beautiful adult male Black-throated Blue Warbler.  We also had our first Hairy Woodpecker in several years and our second Brown Thrasher of the season (likely the one we almost caught we the one from yesterday).  Here's the breakdown:

Hairy Woodpecker 1
Western Wood-pewee 1
House Wren 1
Gray Catbird 1
Brown Thrasher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Green-tailed Towhee 3
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through October 13. We are opening nets at 6:40 and should have birds back at the station by 7:20. We will close nets most days at 11:40, although we are closing earlier as needed due to the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!
