[cobirds] DFO Monthly Program - 9/23

Monday, September 23
There's No Sex Like Insects
Mike Weissmann, PhD

DFO monthly programs are held at the Unity Spiritual Center of Denver, 3021 S. University Blvd, Denver. Programs begin at 7 PM.

Colorado entomologist Mike Weissmann will take our DFO audience on an entertaining look at the wild, wondrous, and even wacky world of "bug sex" at the September DFO monthly program. It's a peek into the fascinating and often bizarre mating and reproductive practices of insects and their relatives.

Come learn that plants with yellow flowers are the "singles' bar" for soldier beetles . . . and that insects attract mates with everything from flashing lights (lightning bugs), colors and patterns (butterflies), pheromones, sounds and claws. Mike will explore and explain the varied methods of insect mating and reproduction, he will also bring some special guests – live arthropods.

Weissmann is chief entomologist for Vector Disease Control International. His current research focuses on Colorado mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus they can carry. He also presents insect-related educational programs to audiences of all ages, including the award- winning "Dr. Mike's Bag of Bugs."

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology at the University of Colorado Boulder and his doctorate in entomology from Colorado State University, where he continues to serve as an affiliate faculty member. He also is an adjunct curator at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and a department associate in the entomology collection at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Weissmann has published a variety of technical articles about insect taxonomy, biology, and behavior and is co-author of popular guides to insects in regional parks and monuments.
