[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake---Pueblo Reservoir

Today, I took the two hour drive to Pueblo Reservoir hoping to see the rare Black-legged Kittiwake.  Thanks to Loch Kilpatrick for informing me the bird was being seen below the visitor center on the southeast portion of the lake.  When I drove up, Gwen Moore was looking at this great bird!!  Thank you, Brandon Percival, for finding and reporting this great bird and keeping everyone updated on the location details.  Pictures of this bird can be seen below:

[cobirds] Kittiwake info

The last update I heard about from today is at 3:20pm from the South Shore Marina area at Pueblo Reservoir.  I don't know if anyone was out looking for it, later on or not.

If today's pattern works for tomorrow, it might be worth looking for it, way west, like in the State Wildlife Area, early in the morning.  Several people were looking from Sailboard launching area before sunrise, and the bird didn't appear.  We then we over to West Fishing Road, after 9am, when it flew by us, heading east.  Then it was at Sailboard launching area and then the SE Corner of the Lake for several hours in the mid to late morning through 3:20pm at least.

I've heard more people are hoping to try for it tomorrow, I'll likely be checking the Reservoir tomorrow, though won't start at Sailboard, since that didn't work out early this morning.

I'll post to cobirds, if I happen to find it.

A Red-necked Grebe and three Common Loons were off Sailboard launching area today.  I don't think anything else of note was found at Pueblo Reservoir today, though perhaps other things were seen.

[cobirds] Windy Gap Res., Grand County 30 October

COBirds,

Made a quick stop yesterday (somewhere between 4-5 pm) at Windy Gap Reservoir in Grand County, just west of the town of Granby at the intersection of US-40 and 125. Just a brief stop with the family to make time before dark, but the lake was quite birdy.  Hundreds of ducks of decent variety, a fair number of Canada/Cackler type Geese, and a few pelicans.  Zero Larids, jaeger type birds, or shorebirds.  Highlight for me was picking out a dark 'female goldeneye' distant bird, and when I finally got the scope set up and trained in her direction, a handsome male surfaced right next to her. Counted 5 Barrow's Goldeneye total but there certainly could have been more.   Was hoping for a scoter but in a brief/incomplete scan I could not detect one.

I've stopped at this lake (again, briefly) a small handful of times in the last 2-3 years and there are always a few things. This was my first stop with a scope and I wish it weren't so brief because it was birdier than usual. Certainly worth stopping if you're passing through the area. Could turn up some goodies.

Canada/Cackling Goose - a few dozen, didn't see any obvious Cacklers, but didn't bother trying
Gadwall - dozens+
American Wigeon - a couple/few dozen
Mallard - couple dozen
?Northern Shoveler - one possible distant bird in brief binoc scan, but didn't see any when I set up the scope
Redhead - 20
Ring-necked Duck - dozens+
scaup sp. - dozens, didn't bother focusing on scaup but thought I had a nice Greater head shape on one close bird
Barrow's Goldeneye - 5 (3 male, 2 female) in what I'd guess to be the middle of the lake
(zero Common Goldeneye detected)
(didn't see any loons)
(zero grebes)
American White Pelican - 5
American Coot - 5

Happy Halloween!

[cobirds] Pre-trip Scouting for upcoming Raptor Alley Tour #1 [Northwest Weld]

Hi all

Saturday (windy) had the following ...
  • Northern Harrier - 4
  • Merlin - 1 (just south of my house--must be the "usual")
  • Red-tailed Hawk - 11
  • Ferruginous Hawk - 4
  • American Kestrel - 6
  • Golden Eagle - 2 (west of Nunn; and just north of my house)

Sunday birded all the various farm ponds south of Loveland (Berthoud, Highland, etc) ... apparently "all" ducks favor this region more than north of Fort Collins or north central Weld County.  I saw a wide variety and large numbers of waterfowl.

Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn

[cobirds] Black Swift Movement Ecology

Greetings this request is posted with permission.

I am writing to make you aware of an exciting new crowdfunding campaign that will raise needed dollars to study the movement ecology of the Black Swift. Until recent years, the ecology of the northern Black Swift has been one of the greatest ornithological mysteries in North America.

At Bird Conservancy, we are proud to have partnered with the US Forest Service and other collaborators to begin to unravel the mystery. Thanks to collaborative research efforts, we are starting to understand more about where Black Swifts breed and overwinter. Our collective research effort with geolocators led to the first documented migratory path and wintering area for this species - the Amazon Basin of Brazil. As a result it was recognized, for the first time ever, on Brazil's ornithological register in 2014.

With your support, we will learn even more. In the coming year we will outfit Black Swifts with GPS pinpoint tags that will allow us to better understand their movement all year long. We will attempt to answer how far they forage, pin point precise migration path(s) as well as wintering areas, and determine whether they sleep on the wing during the winter.

Please follow the link to learn more about our campaign https://experiment.com/blackswift.  We sincerely hope you will help us reach our modest goal to support this important work.

Contributions made through this campaign are not tax-deductible but we hope you will take pride in knowing that every dollar you contribute helps push the boundaries of knowledge and advance conservation of the Black Swift.

Good birding!

[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake still in SE Corner around 12:20pm

I think about 14 more people or more were able to see the adult basic Black-legged Kittiwake this morning, at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County, 31 October 2016.  Most people have seen it at either Sailboard launching area or in the SE Corner of the Reservoir.  It is very windy now.

Happy so many people were able to see it today, and yesterday.

[cobirds] Larimer gulls

I toured lakes in and around Loveland, CO yesterday afternoon (southeast Larimer County). Horseshoe Lake is currently the main gull hangout. Large gulls were mainly in the southwest lobe, with several hundred California Gulls (including at least one apparent "albertaensis" from the Canadian breeding range), an adult Thayer's and dozens of Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls (I counted 14 adults of the latter!). Smaller gulls were mainly at the northeast corner near the farm pond on the north side of 57th street. The Ring-billed Gull flock has swollen to multiple thousands. I did not find any Mew Gulls but this would be the place to look for them (a couple immatures were reported in the area by other birders last week). A straggler immature Franklin's Gull was in the flock.

Access to the southwest lobe of Horseshoe Lake is tricky. I walked in along the inlet canal where a sign indicates private property and that fishermen are welcome. I hope it applies to birders as well.

Also of note was a Ross's Goose hanging with Canada's along the north shore of Lake Loveland (photo).

[cobirds] glorious night flight, Lafayette/Erie, Oct. 30

Check this out:

Heard flying over the stores at the intersection of US-287 and Arapahoe during nautical twilight this foggy Sunday morning, Oct. 30. I'm sure the low cloud ceiling and bright lights had something to do with it.

[cobirds] Recent Birds Ken Caryl Valley and Littleton

On Oct 28 a Swamp Sparrow was along Massey Draw below my home in Ken Caryl Valley. I did not refind it when I visited this morning. A continuing roost/day-long gathering of Common Grackles in the neighborhood beside St. Mary Church on S. Prince in Littleton had  more birds in evidence on the evening of Oct 28 than in recent days. I made a conservative estimate of 600, and suspect there may have been as many as 800 grackles.

This morning (Oct 29) a late female Red-naped Sapsucker was foraging in Russian Olives and cottonwoods along Massey Draw in Ken Caryl Valley.

[Note: this area of Ken Caryl Ranch does not have general public access]

[cobirds] Re: Eastern Screech Owl, Littleton, Jefferson Co.

Awesome! thanks for sharing :) Rosanne Juergens

On Friday, October 28, 2016 at 4:05:49 PM UTC-6, Scott Somershoe wrote:
This morning I investigated a big brouhaha of birds in my back yard in Littleton, Jeff Co.  After a few minutes of staring into a thicket where numerous birds were throwing a fit, I found an Eastern Screech Owl about 10 ft away. The bird was unhappy with the situation and flew into some big pines just across the fence.  Although it was trying hard to hide, it gave me some decent views.  The blue jays, red-breasted nuthatches, black-capped chickadees, and curious house finches and robins eventually left it alone. I thought it might stay for a while, but it was gone when I checked on it 30 min later. Maybe it was just hiding better or took off in desperate search of a cavity!

Some crummy photos of the screech owl and list of other birds, many of which participated in the angry mob, are in the eBird list below.

Good yard birding!
