[cobirds] White-cheeked goose ID

Hello, Birders.

As many of us know, the "white-cheeked goose" conundrum is especially acute in Colorado. That's because we have large numbers of the biggest of the small geese (Richardson's Cackling Goose, Branta h. hutchinsii) and large numbers of the smallest of the large geese (Lesser Canada Geese, B. canadensis parvipes). And sometimes they overlap in plumage, structural, and probably vocal and genetic characters.

Here's an example of a "white-cheeked goose," seen this past weekend in Lamar, Prowers County, with plumage and structural characters of a Cackling Goose, but which seemed too large overall to be that species:
