[cobirds] Re: Say's Phoebe at Littleton, Arapahoe

The SAY'S PHOEBE just returned to the same perch near the pastoral office at St. Mary, only to be displaced by a Townsend's Solitaire. I think the Solitaire was saying, "Hey, look around! Can't you see it is still winter here?"

[cobirds] Rough-legged

I did the drive to look for the Snowy Owl yesterday before the storm. Best to spot against a brown landscape than a white. Felt like the middle of nowhere except for the two other birders at the intersection of 94 and 11th. We braved the cold from the storm front as long as we could. No Snowy.

But... on my return I took 70 back and exited to 86 which goes into Castle Rock. There were many Rough-legged Hawks perching low on fence posts. I counted 15. You have to be watching far ahead and be prepared around each bend in the road. Very up close, got some great photos.

May your winds be strong
and your thermals high.

[cobirds] N Roxborough Park Rd

A detour around N Roxborough Park Road was rewarding.  A Prairie Falcon and a Ferruginous Hawk sat on two adjacent poles.  A Bald Eagle flew over.  Further down the road, a Red Tail, another Ferruginous Hawk, and a dark phase Ferruginous Hawk occupied poles within spitting distance.  Finally, a Rough-legged Hawk was at the entrance to Roxborough State Park.

All around noon.

[cobirds] Hybrid Geese

Greetings All

Yes, winter doldrums. I've created a set from my photos of hybrid geese. Getting some awesome look at Loomiller Park in Longmont and Frederick Rec Area (Weld County) has allowed me to feel as if I understand these birds a bit more.

Photos, mostly from CO, but a few from WA, can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/sets/72157640339259034/

[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Varied Thrush persists! Harris's Sparrow

Had the pleasure of taking Lisa Edwards and Brandon Percival to see La Veta's lovely Varied Thrush this morning. It was fun catching up with them. Brandon spotted a Harris's Sparrow very shortly thereafter. It was great having both birds in the same binocular view!

The homeowners are still welcoming guests by appointment.  I am taking a local birder over on Saturday morning. We will meet at the park in La Veta a little before 8:30 a.m. If anyone is interested, just let me know.

[cobirds] Lincoln County Snowy Owl

Birders,

I had to do some business today in Colorado Springs, and took the "long
way" between Las Animas and the Springs via State Highways 71 and 94.
Acting on information from Mark Peterson, I stopped at the intersection
of Lincoln County Road 11.6 and Highway 94, about 15 miles west of
Punkin Center.

I immediately spotted the Snowy Owl previously reported by Kellner et
al. on January 26th. It was sitting on the ground in a field in the
valley beyond the trees, NNE of the intersection where I parked.

Good luck to those who try for this owl.

[cobirds] Rosies and Evening Grosbeaks at Fawn Brook Inn Allenspark (Boulder Co)

At about 11:30 today I saw about 40 Brown-capped Rosy-Finches, 1 Black rosy-Finch, and 25 Evening Grosbeaks at Fawn Brook Inn. It was warmish but very windy and a storm moving in. 12 Pine Siskins, 1 Brown Creeper. 5 Mountain Chickadees, 1 Black-capped. Hairy Woodpecker 1 pair and Downy Woodpecker 1 pair. 3 Steller's Jays. I went to deposit seed at the front door and was surprised that the flock of finches (Rosies and EVGR) came down, some of them not five feet away. But when I came back from lunch at Meadow (?) down the street, not a finch in sight, so sometimes it takes a bit of waiting.

[cobirds] Brant - Redstone Park; Douglas Co

Brant - Back at Redstone Park.  It was on the far east end of the park right in front of the Lebsack Tennis Center.  That is off of Aspen Creek Dr.

Golden Eagle - The same immature bird that has been in the same general location for three weeks.  It is off of E Quincy Ave between S Powhaton Rd (turn off to Aurora Reservoir) and S Watkins Rd.  It seems to have found a wintering spot near the prairie dog colony there.  This is Arapahoe county.

Brown Creeper, Mountain Chickadees, and the nuthatches - Hwy 67 and Rampart Range.  I managed to capture a series of photos showing a chickadee's foraging/eating process.  Pretty neat stuff.  If anyone can tell me what the green tuft on the tree is called, I'd appreciate it.  I want to label those pictures and it would be a bonus to be able to put a name to that little green clump thingy (do you see how 'clump thingy' has absolutely no style at all)?

[cobirds] Cherry Creek SP - 1st cycle Mew Gull etc

Today a 1st cycle MEW GULL offered a pretty good study as it stood with Ring-billeds on the ice off the mouth of Cherry Creek west of the Pelican parking area. I was happy to see it, but I missed the way I used to walk up to within 15 feet of these birds back at the California coast. Other gulls of some note were 1 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the ice about 300 m east of the marina, and a 1st cycle THAYER'S GULL near Cherry Creek mouth.

Also noted: 1 female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER (with some 350 Commons), 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 6 or 7 BALD EAGLES, and 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET (Pipeline Trail).

[cobirds] Saturday at Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wild Life

Hi Cobirders Saturday my son ask me where I wanted to go birding I said Rocky Mountain Arsenal as it was not far and interesting birds for
the new year were reported. So we left at 10:15 AM and quickly got to turn off at I-70 and Quebec. Going north there was a huge flock of
Cackling Geese to the northeast flying south with thousands of birds.

Taking the auto tour first around the Bison enclosures there was not anything unusual a few Crows, Magpies , Starlings, White-crown Sparrows
and 3 or 4 small flocks of House Finches flew into the tree along the road.

Going south on the road leaving the tour area we came to the woods on the west side which had a huge roost of Crows and a row of lower shrubs
all along the front of the woods filled with Starlings maybe a 1000 and more back west to the another 500. Something caused all these to rise up
at the same time . What a spectacle.

We turned around and took the road going east to the 3 lake area. There was a Red-tailed Hawk flying low as we entered to view the larger Lake
which had open water in front of all the iced over larger portion of the lake.
Here was about 200 Cackling Geese an∂ 35 Ring-billed Gulls with 5 Herring Gulls standing on the edge of the ice. In the open water were
Common Mergansers 5 female and 2 males. Also 4 Common Goldeneyes.

Near here we got a good look at a Prairie Falcon which flew past us and landed on a nearby pole.

All the other nearby water was frozen still so we went out and to the Visitor Center. Around there and near by were many of the Crows and
Starlings coming from the roost area.

Checked a huge field while eating lunch. Nothing showed up.

Continuing on the road east we came to Lake Ladore (?) just to the north. A tour group of 38 birders plus few others were checking this
lake which was mostly frozen but had a lot of open water near the road. This held another flock of about 200 Cackling Geese which we looked
for a White-fronted Goose -no luck. With them were Coots , Shovelers, 2 Redheads and a Lesser Scaup.

Best of all were the 17 Bald Eagles stationed around the northern shore on the ice.

On way out toward the west entrance there was a pair of Furruginous Hawks.

Temp. was in the Fifties and mostly calm. Got home at 3PM. Great Day for a day in January.

[cobirds] Winter Wren Fort Collins/Larimer

I re-found the Winter Wren along the Poudre Bike Trail just west of Lee Martinez Park today.  This is most likely the same individual that I saw in December.  The little beasty was in the same area described by Dave Leatherman in his previous post.

Re: [cobirds] Teller County - Manitou Lake - Record Breaking Day!!!

Jeff,

Thanks for your post.  I think you are touching on an experience we all have.  As a matter of fact I had a morning like yours at Manitou Lake in late December looking for the Rusty Blackbirds you reported there.  I totally struck out on any bird life, just as you did and did not report it which probably should have.  I kind of look at that kind of experience as valuable to give one an appreciation for the days when one sees 30 or 40 species during migration at the same place.  It also gives one the opportunity of experiencing what Thomas Merton, a favorite spiritual writer of mine, calls "the many moods of one good place", which Manitou Lake clearly is.

Maybe the Sandwich Tern and the Golden-winged Warbler will be back this summer.

Ok – this is not the record you expect.

I simply had the oddest day ever at Manitou Lake and Trout Creek downstream of the dam – that I can ever remember having yesterday.

After three days (Fri-Sun) hitting the 50's here in Teller County at the end of January, I decided to go see what was popping at Manitou Lake and Trout Creek.

I spent 1.5 hours at the lake and walked 500 yards downstream from the dam and back. It was gorgeous outside at 10am; about 46 degrees when I started.

I neither saw nor heard a single species of bird the entire time! Not even a raven crossing overhead; nor the usual bunch of crows bothering the ice fishermen on the lake; no song sparrows to be found along the creek or in the marsh; no lone mallard in the few open pieces of water on the creek; no misc sparrows feeding along the south-facing portion of the dam; no chickadees, juncos, nuthatches, tree sparrows, red-tailed hawks, rusty blackbirds, woodpeckers, dipper, NADA! I simply couldn't turn up sight nor sound of a single species of bird while there.

I am pretty sure I have never encountered such a situation in 25+ years up here on a visit to Manitou Lake/Trout Creek at any time of the year or time-of-day. Even on the windiest, coldest, worst birding days of the year.

I looked for birds on the 5 mile drive back to my home; and only upon entering my neighborhood, did I see my first bird – a raven soaring overhead. (Edgar Allan Poe probably had something to say about this.)

Anyway – simply so remarkable – that I felt the need to post about it.

p.s. To add to that, I was in the hot tub earlier in the morning at my house, and had a cacophony of bird call/song to listen to. Flickers, white-breasted nuthatch, house finch, cassin's finch all singing; while steller's jays, magpies and all sort of other species chimed in with welcoming calls of their own. What an unexpected inconsistency.

Hopefully a little less than 5 months before 'Kotter' shows up on his perch over the hot tub, for his third year in a row, after his winter sojourn in more southerly climes.
