At Chatfield, it feels like migration is over and breeding season is in full swing. A few straggling migrants, but mostly we are catching (again) summer residents who haven’t yet quite figured out where the nets are. The Broad-tailed Hummingbird, who spent much of the last week fixing up her nest in the wooded area just beyond the banding station, was sitting on eggs all morning. Our most interesting bird of the day was a Spotted Sandpiper……a very cute little guy, caught in the net down by the far pond on Water Board property (and the same net that we caught one in in 2010). Total new for the day was 13 birds:
Spotted Sandpiper 1
Willow Flycatcher 1
Gray Catbird 1
Yellow Warbler 6
Common Yellowthroat 2
Lincoln’s Sparrow 1
Red-winged Blackbird 1
Tomorrow (Sunday) is our last day. We will start taking down as soon as the birds slow down and/or it gets too hot, so likely around 10:30 – 11 a.m., given the weather predictions.
