RE: [cobirds] Mountain Chickadees(nesting)---Lakewood/Jeffco

Hi Mark and Chuck,
Steve Martin had these two species produce hybrid offspring on his property near Wellington several years ago (mid-1990's, as I recall, see cover of CFO Journal during that period for a pic), and I have had Mountains nest at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins a few times (just saw a fledged nestling the other day).  In other words, it happens, but is certainly noteworthy, especially the further east you go.

Some time back (late 1970s or early 1980s) there was a winter irruption of Mountain Chickadees into the Middle Rio Grande Valley in the vicinity of Albuquerque, NM. Some of the birds lingered in the valley through the summer. Bill Howe did graduate work (master thesis, I think) on hybridization between the lingering Mountain Chickadees and Black-capped Chickadees which are resident in the valley. While this doesn't answer the Front Range question, it does suggest that the Mountains may linger at lower elevations once drought has brought them down for the winter.

I call this time of the year June Gloom.  Migration is over and the hummingbirds(Rufous and Calliope) have yet to start their southern migration.  This year,  I've had the fortune of enjoying Mountain Chickadees nesting in our front yard in SW Lakewood. These guys have driven out both our Black-capped Chickadees and House Wrens.   Does anyone out there have any information on how uncommon this nesting location is?  The Bob & Bob book has a record from Boulder in the 70's and one from Wheat Ridge in 1982.  Thanks for any information you can provide of these Chickadees nesting east of the foothills!
