Like Chico, we also have fewer birds on this warm, calm day. Banded 17 birds, plus caught 2 birds banded in prior years, including a Yellow Warbler banded as an adult male in 2007, then recaptured in 08 and 09 but not since until today. That means at least an 8 year old bird! (Longevity record on this species is 11 years.) First day in May without Yellow-rumpeds. Here’s today’s breakdown:
Blue Jay 1 (FOS, and actually the first banded at this station)
Black-capped Chickadee 1 return, banded 4/30/10
House Wren 5
Grey Catbird 1 (FOS)
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Yellow Warbler 2 new, 1 return (see above)
Northern Waterthrush 1 (FOS, and likely only one for season; don’t catch many of these)
Lincoln’s Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel’s 1
Red-winged Blackbird 1
Brown-headed Cowbird 1
American Goldfinch 1
Heat expected to continue for several days, so like Steve I expect fewer birds until we get a weather change. We, however, will be open through June 2, so hoping we’ll catch the peak of the migration!
