Interesting day, post-storm. When we arrived at 7 a.m., it was absolutely beautiful, there were tons of Robins high up in the trees, lots of Chipping Sparrows on the ground, and it seemed like birds “everywhere”. I think we would have caught a lot of birds early, except that the nets were frozen shut! First net was finally opened at 8:40, and a few of the nets in the shade never got opened at all. Our surprise of the day was 18 Hermit Thrushes, certainly more than I’ve caught in one day at Chatfield. (In fact, it is more than we’ve ever caught in one season, except for 2011 when we had 24 total.) Here was the breakdown of birds for the day:
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 (FOS)
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 1 (FOS)
Hermit Thrush 18 (FOS)
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 6
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel’s 1
