"Worldwide, human population has increased from 1.6 billion to 7.7 billion people from 1900 to 2020. With an increase in human population comes an increase in impacts on surrounding environments. Increased waste material and the growth of construction have consequences for resident fauna. Many studies have identified trash and plastic materials that birds use in nests and for other purposes, and several bird species have been observed using anthropogenic materials. Ash Austin, University of Northern Colorado, studies the relation of human impact on terrestrial birds with Red-tailed Hawks being his current and primary focus. This study aims to demonstrate how human created resources, such as waste materials and buildings, influence the nesting behaviors of terrestrial birds.

Join us in person at the Fort Collins Senior Center on February 9th. An additional presentation that evening will be introducing the recipients of the Alex Cringan scholarship 2021: Talon Nightwalker, Director of Northern Colorado Wildlife Center, and Noelle Mason, CSU Biology student. The two will give a short report on their project!"

[cobirds] Cranes on the Cusp

We are starting to see and hear a few of the birds that bring excitement and amazement each spring....sandhill cranes! Only a few so far but enough for us to be watching in anticipation. We await the Refuge to turn on the water and watch as magically the cranes appear almost overnight. Will keep you posted....

[cobirds] Re: "Lafayette Birds!"--tomorrow, Sun., Feb. 5, 1pm

What are "Arby's Nuts"?

Hey, all.

It's the beginning of the month, so that means it's time for "Lafayette Birds!" We'll get underway tomorrow, Sun., Feb. 5, at 1pm MST at The Shack at Greenlee Wildlife Preserve in Lafayette, Boulder Co. The event, sponsored by the City of Lafayette, is free and open to the public. No RSVP required; just show up. All are welcome--children, families, and curiosity-seekers especially so. We bird in separate small groups that canvas the entire "Greater Greenlee Ecosystem" for birds and other biota. ("Other biota" in Feb. in Lafayette tend to be squirrels and lichens.)

Bohemian waxwings are around. If a flock is spotted, we'll initiate the R-cubed (Reisman Rapid Response) maneuver and get all participants to the flock as expeditiously as possible. Also spotted in the past 10 days at Greenlee & vicinity: greater white-fronted goose, snow goose, hooded merganser, bald eagle, ferruginous hawk, golden eagle, merlin, prairie falcon, bushtits up the wazoo, mountain chickadee, "Arby Nuts," and Townsend solitaire. There are no guarantees in this life, but sightings of the following are guaranteed: white-crowned sparrow, spotted towhee, and red-winged blackbird. And I guess we won't be looking for the Chinese surveillance balloon anymore... Comet STC (C/2022 E3) actually *was* seen at the preserve a few nights ago, but I digress.

See you tomorrow!

"I laughed, I cried, it changed my life."

"[This event] is the most fun I've had since the Anner Bylsma recital at Macky Auditorium in 1994."

"The most fun you'll have with your pants on."

"Are the Broncos still in the playoffs?"

"I've heard leaders appreciate it when you ply them with kombucha, donuts, and sushi."

"Is it safe to look at a western tanager?"
