Today marks the last day of the very first complete season of banding at Pineridge Natural Area! It has been a lovely season, with 238 captures total averaging 9 birds a day, with 28 species banded and 30 caught in the nets. This last week was slow in the middle, with some breezy nets causing partial or early closures, but today had several treats including a Bushtit with a lovely dark mask and two subspecies of Dark-eyed Junco. The last two birds we got were a beautiful pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches, some of my absolute favorites and a touching farewell to the Pineridge station for this year.
This report is for 10/3 through 10/6.
New bands:
Swainson's Thrush - 1
Bushtit - 1
Black-capped Chickadee - 1
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 4
Wilson's Warbler - 3
Oregon Junco (Dark-eyed Junco) - 2
Pink-sided Junco (Dark-eyed Junco) - 2
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow - 1
Unknown White-crowned Sparrow - 1
Recaptures:
Black-capped Chickadee - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 1 (banded earlier this spring)
I want to extend a personal thank you to everyone who has visited and supported our station in its fledgling days. We had so many visitors, groups and registrations and drop-ins, and the season went very smoothly thanks to the support of the community and our wonderful volunteers. Thank you all for your interest, and I can't wait to see how this station grows and what birds it catches over the coming years!
Sincerely,
Josephine Tagestad
