[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/14/23

Banding during the solar eclipse.........eerie......as the temperature dropped, the forest got totally quiet; even the ever-present Jay stopped calling.  We all agreed it was a wonderful place to be as our world got strange for awhile.......

Okay, we did have a couple of surprises today, in addition to our White-crowned Sparrows (9 new, 5 recaps).  Sparrow rarities for the banding station - we started the morning with a Swamp Sparrow (the 4th since 2016) and ended with a Savannah (the 10th since 2016).  Both hatch year birds.  Here's the total new birds for the day:

Hermit Thrush 1
Savannah Sparrow 1
Swamp Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 9
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 3
Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 1

If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends.  As long as the heat continues, you are more likely to see birds if you come earlier in the morning.  Click here to make a reservation.
