[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/30/23

Continued slow (how many different ways can I say that?)  Thanks to our wonderful visitors, who are interested in the broader conservation picture that emerges when we have a year like this and deeply appreciate the few birds they do get to see.  (Today, we enjoyed the side-by-side comparisons of Swainson's and Hermit Thrushes, Gray Catbird and Brown Thrasher, and Song and Lincoln Sparrows.)  Here's the breakdown of the 9 new birds today (we also had 8 recaps, which is how we got the catbird and thrasher together):

House Wren 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1

We will be banding tomorrow, unless the wind drives us away!

If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends.  As long as the heat continues, you are more likely to see birds if you come earlier in the morning.  Click here to make a reservation.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Pineridge Natural Area Banding Report 9/29-30

After a slow day yesterday (though with a new visitor, a Blue Jay!), we were excited to have activity pick up a little bit today for the CSU Field Ornithology club, which was fortunate. Weather has been lovely still, nice and cool in the mornings and warming up as noon approaches, although we're expecting that to change next week; it'll be curious to see how the birds respond to some cooler October weather!

This report is for 9/29 through 9/30.

New bands:
Blue Jay - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 5
Wilson's Warbler - 5
Spotted Towhee - 1

Recaptures:
Wilson's Warbler - 1 (banded earlier this fall)

This banding station will be operating Tuesday through Saturday, weather and trail closures permitting, from sunrise until about 12:30 PM. Next week we are opening at 6:40. Peak hours for seeing birds in hand aren't yet established, but so far we have low to moderately steady activity from about 8:00 to 9:00 and another small push at around 10:00. Park at the Maxwell Natural Area parking lot and walk south along the trail towards Dixon Reservoir, and you will see our table and blue awning on the little hillside to the left of the main trail. Consider signing up for your visit at this link;  registration is free and helps us plan ahead for visitor numbers. I hope to see you there!

[cobirds] CSR, El Paso Co, Sat

Hey COBirders,

Nothing rare to report from Clear Spring Ranch banding - just a busy morning for the first time in weeks.

84 birds netted today, 80 sparrows of 5 species, one recap Wilson's Warbler, 2 Orange-crowned Warblers banded, and a Hangin-around F MacGillivray's warbler banded a week ago. My latest ever catching a Mac is 10/1, so this one is pretty late.

51 sparrows and the Mac all netted before 7:30!  Chipping Sparrows appeared in a large flock yesterday, and I caught a few of them, but today they were doing the typical CHSP flock thing - rushing headlong into the line of nets like machine-gun bullets. One net had 27 at the same time. Very nice, as I have only been banding 1-2 per day for weeks.

Also banded bird #1000 for the season was a Lincoln's Sparrow.  I'm happy to get to that high value, but in perspective, I've only had one fall this slow in the last 8 years.

Birds today:
Chipping Sparrow - 64, banded the first 11
Lincoln's Sparrow 7
Song Sparrow 3
Gambel's WC Sparrow 5
Spotted Towhee 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2 (AD M's)
MacGillivray's Warbler recap (HY F)
Wilson's Warbler recap from 9/25, (AD F)

and that was about it. Except for the CHSP, very little movement was seen today, after a busy sky yesterday - including 115 Blue Jays in 8 open flocks heading downstream.
 Today - 3 BLJA's

Glad to be busy, finally!

Happy Migration,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Unheeded omens - Arapahoe

The Romans once watched birds not to list them, but to read them for signs about the future. The lineage of this is stored in the English language, in the word auspice (auspicious, inauspicious...), which is both a prophetic sign and the watching of birds for omens, which could usually be found in birds' flights and feeding activities.

Had I been more an augur and less a birder, I might have taken the unusually large kettles of Turkey Vultures (at least 75...) that passed me in the morning seriously. And I might have worried over an evening Eastern Screech Owl, trilling at the full moon from somewhere near my home. Then, I would have kept vigil in my yard overnight to see what the birds foretold. Instead, I listed both species, celebrating, rather than worrying over, the vultures surpassing the previous eBird county high by about 50% and the Screech Owl finally leaving the High Line Canal to become a yard bird. What birders celebrate -- large gatherings of birds and birds out of place are -- augers generally worry over.

I woke to an empty chicken coop. And somewhere, a fulfilled fox.

Some signs that might foretell where late autumn birds gathers...around Centennial, I've yet to find a Common Hackberry with a drupe on it, a change from last year. Ashes are seedy, though.

[cobirds] Wood Thrush -El Paso County-Clear Spring Ranch

Hello all!
Dr. Claire Ramos' research lab caught and banded a Wood Thrush during migration banding this morning at Clear Spring Ranch. I'm not sure how re-findable the bird is but it was caught reasonably close to paved public walkways.
We will be banding tomorrow from 620am-11am ish depending on the temperature.

There is also a creek cleanup going on tomorrow hosted by CSU Pueblo's chapter of the Wildlife Society. Could be a busy day at CSRA.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Pineridge Natural Area Banding Report 9/26-28

Cool mornings and warm afternoons have been pretty good to us so far this week at Pineridge. We started the week off with a bang, with another (!!) This report is for 9/26 through 9/28.

New bands:
Downy Woodpecker - 1
Black-billed Magpie - 1
House Wren - 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 2
Wilson's Warbler - 8
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow - 1
White-throated Sparrow - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Spotted Towhee - 4

Recaptures:
Downy Woodpecker - 1 (banded earlier this fall)
Black-capped Chickadee - 1 (banded last spring)
Wilson's Warbler - 1 (banded earlier this fall)
Song Sparrow - 1 (banded earlier this fall)
Spotted Towhee - 1 (banded earlier this fall)

This banding station will be operating Tuesday through Saturday, weather and trail closures permitting, from sunrise until about 12:30 PM. This week we are opening at 6:40. Peak hours for seeing birds in hand aren't yet established, but so far we have low to moderately steady activity from about 7:30 to 9 and another small push at around 10:00. Park at the Maxwell Natural Area parking lot and walk south along the trail towards Dixon Reservoir, and you will see our table and awning on the little hillside to the left of the main trail. Re: [cobirds] Kansas report, flamingo

Possible spots southeast (I don't dare say likely): Neenoshe Reservoir (Kiowa) and John Martin Reservoir (Bent) have what could be attractive habitat conditions at present, esp. the southeast pool at the former. And Sheridan Lake (Kiowa). Or maybe Lake Henry (Crowley) with a couple of saline-looking side ponds and other features. God forbid the Meredith Feedlot ponds (Crowley), but I could imagine it.

Re: [cobirds] Kansas report, flamingo

I was just at the Blanca Wetlands…that's my crazy pick of a location.
What a backdrop for photos that would be.

Re: [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/27/23

This post reminds me of a funny story from long ago. I was working with a bird bander and also a guy who was a real jokester. Somehow we all got invited to a fancy dinner where the dessert was flamingo-shaped profiteroles. The jokester smuggled out a profiterole and tangled it in one of the banding nets, where it waited all night to be found by the astonished bander at dawn. And thus that is probably (hopefully!) the only case of a "flamingo" ever being caught in a mist net.

Maybe you had to be there... :)

Hi All,
These sightings of vagrant flamingos in the eastern U.S. are apparently due to Hurricane Idalia.  Not only in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, but also 5 flamingos sighted north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (the first record for that state).  WOW!!
With global warming, it makes one wonder if flamingos could even establish permanent flocks throughout Florida (and perhaps even states adjacent to Florida).  This time they could be protected (and not shot for feathers on women's hats).

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Song Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1
