Ash-throated flycatcher, Frisco Bike Park, Summit Co., Colo., Thurs., July 13, 2023.
-- Earlier this sunny Thurs., July 13, Andrew Floyd and I were scouting the youth/family/student campsite for next week's joint conference of Western Field Ornithologists and Colorado Field Ornithologists. The things we do for you people. :-)
Anyhow, at one point, whilst ambling about the lodgepole pine forests at the Frisco Bike Park, in the company of ruby-crowned kinglets and pine siskins and white-crowned sparrows, what should I stumble upon but an ash-throated flycatcher. Oh, and a Brewer sparrow for Brett, although probably not sufficiently altitudinal for Brett's empyrean purposes. And who knows?—maybe the flycatcher will still be hanging out at the bike park for next week's convention; Copper Mountain is right around the corner therefrom.
The only crossbills I audio-recorded up there were type 2 red crossbills. A couple of early calliope hummingbirds, too, but no rufi that I could discern. And wonderful butterflies and wildflowers everywhere.
Looking forward to seeing close to 300 of you next week!
