Hey, everybody.
Please join us this coming Sun., Nov. 7, at 1pm MST (fall back!), for the monthly installment of "Lafayette Birds!" The outing, sponsored by the City of Lafayette, is free and open to the public. All are welcome: no RSVP necessary; children and curiosity-seekers especially welcome. We'll assemble at 1pm at The Shack at Greenlee Wildlife Preserve, Lafayette, Boulder Co. (park on-street or at one of the two Waneka Lake parking areas).
We'll watch birds and other wildlife until around 3pm. Leaders: Sheridan Samano, Van Rudd, Mikaela Caldera, Don Sutherland, Hannah Floyd, Alejo Williams Viveros, Martin Ogle, and Art Reisman. Do we got you covered, or what! We head out in small groups, we practice social distancing, and we recommend masking.
Lots of cool wildlife of late around the preserve and environs. On a ramble around the area earlier this sunny Fri., afternoon, Nov. 5, I saw a late orange-crowned warbler, a juvenile greater white-fronted goose, and a rubicon kinglet. Other recent bird sightings have included Ross goose, hooded merganser, bald eagle, Harlan hawk, gray catbird, bushtit, cheddar waxwing, pine siskin, white-throated sparrow, and Harris sparrow. Despite the blusteriness and frozen precip around Halloween, many insects are hanging on; the epic migration of dainty sulphur butterflies, fall 2021, continues apace, and various orthopterans are still singing.
We will look for all this and more on Sunday. Hope to see you there! In the meantime here's a gallery of thumbnails from within the past two weeks (pics by Yours Truly, all from Greenlee and Waneka):
