[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron - Yuma country

The Yellow-crowned Night-Herons continue at Stalker SWA just west of Wray. The DFO field trip yesterday added it as well as the two Black-bellied Plovers at Prewitt to the Colorado Big Year species list. Blowing past David's previous goal of 333 species for the year so far.

The herons were on the North side of the Stalker Lake roosting in the Russian Olive trees. The adult was in the central part of the northern shoreline and the two juveniles were East of the adult about a 100 yards. We spotted them by moving along the South shore and scoping across the lake thanks to the sharp eyes of Betty Glass and Chris Owens. Also heard two Northern Cardinals on the west end of the lake. You can get a good view of a marsh on the NW corner of the lake if you climb a little steep hill on the SW side of the lake. From here we got good looks at three Solitary Sandpipers. Surprised there were not more shorebirds at this nice looking habitat.

Common Nighthawks and Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen at the fish hatchery just north of the lake.

At Prewitt we had the two Black-bellied Plovers in glorious breeding plumage. They stand head and shoulders above the other shorebirds and with all black bellies and throats and then white head and neck are quite the contrasts in colors. We were all very impressed! Definitely worth the trip.
