[cobirds] Re: Bushtits - Adams County

I forgot to give the location in more helpful terms....trees next to parking garage at SE corner of 120th and Pecos...though I know they are not back there this afternoon when I checked.

I was stumped on the id because the merlin app did not show it as a potential match with their id tool.
Also, these were much less "fluffy" than most pics.
For a bit I thought they might be gray vireos but they are a bit larger and much less likely and not in groups.
ebird frequency in Adams county is pretty low

[cobirds] Possible Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird in Estes Park, Larimer Co. 5/31

Continuing our visit in Estes Park, I took my regular early morning walk on the west end of town to bird and buy the Denver Post.  At the intersection of Lower Broadview and Marys Lake Road, I saw a bright green male hummingbird with a ruby-red gorget feeding on a low flower near the road.  I was looking down at the bird from no more than 10 feet away.  What immediately struck me was the lack of a wing trill as the bird hovered while feeding and when it flew away.  All the male Broad-tailed Hummingbirds I have ever observed have the wing trill when hovering to feed and when flying.  This is not a voluntary sound since it results from the structure of the wing.  The bird guides note that the trill may be absent in the fall due to feather wear.  The species account in Birds of North America online notes --"Trill is naturally muted by wear, often inaudible by midwinter."  But this bird is flying around in May.

The bird flew out of sight before I could get my camera ready.  I am very familiar with Ruby-throated Hummingbirds from observations at home in Maryland (our only regular hummer).  My brief observation and angle of view did not allow me to note key field marks like the coloring of the breast and armpits, the shape of the tail, and whether the bird had a black "chinstrap" at the top of its gorget which would distinguish it from a Broad-tailed Hummingbird.  My quick impression of the "jizz" of the bird was Ruby-throated.

So my question for seasoned Colorado birders is whether folks have observed spring male Broad-tailed Hummingbirds that do not produce the wing trill.

For now, I have entered this hummer in eBird as "hummingbird sp." but I might change that based on what I hear from you.

Thanks.

Jim Nelson

[cobirds] get your Marsh Wren fix here: St Vrain State Park, Weld

Note from Bev Baker below. She visited the park on the 30th.

Good morning!  I heard at least a dozen marsh wrens singing at St Vrain State Park (Weld County) yesterday. They were in cattails surrounding Pelican pond and vocalizing like crazy, around mid-morning. I got a fleeting glimpse of one. There is an ebird post of one marsh wren in that area from May 27.

State Park entrance fee applies...

[cobirds] Re: Cordilleran Flycatcher, Common Nighthawks - Centennial (Arapahoe)

Common Nighthawks continue to travel north up (approximately) University Ave in Centennial. I've spotted lone birds headed that way on May 28 & May 30. Last night's was lower and a bit more fluttery than the previous passerby. Later on, the brown bats that are back in a neighbor's bat house were feeding about as high as the nighthawk was.

This morning, I walked my dogs back over to the Little Dry Creek & High Line Canal Trail to check on the Cordilleran Flycatcher we'd previously seen on May 28. On our way, we passed by Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, where we had our first Western Kingbirds at the cemetery. There was an apparent pair -- calling and chasing around the local Red-tailed Hawk. A third Western Kingbird called from just beyond the cemetery; there may have been a fourth calling from near that third, out of sight, but I couldn't tell. I tried to transform all of them into Cassin's, but they resisted.

The Cordilleran, meanwhile, continued along the Little Dry Creek, calling and singing loudly. I heard a few other interesting sounds along the canal (now and for a short time only, filled with water) and the creek. But with two dogs in tow, I didn't have the patience to wait those birds out.

Around Centennial, the cottonwoods have turned the world into a snow globe. A few days ago, along the Big Dry Creek Trail, I saw Barn Swallows hunt down a large tuft of cottonwood seed -- I presume for lining a nest? It took a few passes by for one of them to succeed in nabbing it out of the air as it drifted along.

This morning, while dog walking, I heard the Cordilleran Flycatcher still calling from the Little Dry Creek, near the High Line Canal Trail, along East Orchard Rd. I previously heard & saw the bird last Thursday (5/24).

[cobirds] Northern Parula (Larimer)

At dusk yesterday, May 30, a Northern Parula was singing at North Shields Ponds Natural Area. It was north of Sterling Pond, in trees along the fence line. Low quality photo attached here. We have about a week to go of Spring Migration.

[cobirds] Apex Park. Jefferson county

What a lovely walk I had at Apex yesterday. If you are not familiar with Apex it is more or less a vertical corridor following a drainage starting on Lookout Mt and ending near Golden. Near the bottom I heard a BlueJay scolding, then somewhat higher saw a Scrub Jay and further up saw several Stellars Jays. One section had Black Headed grosbeaks frequently. It seemed like their rambling songs overlapped as I went along. With the gurgling of the small creek, the Grosbeaks, some Robins, a Western Tanager and many House Wrens it was an auditory bonanza.

Fortunately it was a cloudy and cool day. Apex can get very hot. If you are interested, be sure to go on an odd numbered day when there are some biking limitations.

Re: [cobirds] Veery singing at Twin Lakes

Can someone describe for me what log they're talking about? I'm here and it looks like you have to wander off the trail through thick heavy grass just to see any logs crossing the ditch (which I presume means the creek?).

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

[cobirds] Veery, Boulder County, Twin Lakes

Cobirders, I am sorry I forgot to put that Twin Lakes is in Boulder County.  It sounds like someone refound the bird this evening.  I uploaded audio (it was faint, on an iPhone) to my eBird list.  If the bird was refound at 7:40 pm, hopefully s/he might stick around until morning.  Good luck! The bird was singing continually, although it was across a ditch in a yard and I never saw him or her.

Re: [cobirds] Veery singing at Twin Lakes

We re-found the singing Veery at ~7:40 pm - pics and perhaps audio to come on ebird. It is in the same location as previously described - with easy access from Twin Lakes road. You can park near where the LOBO trail intersects the road and walk a short distance west to the where the log the crosses the ditch - it was seen and heard in the bush just across the creek to the south.

[cobirds] Veery singing at Twin Lakes

I am listening to (and trying to record on my phone) a singing veery along the Twin Lakes trail. It sounds like it is in a yard to the south of the ditch where there is a big log across the ditch, east of the GHoW nest. If the recordings come out I will post them on an eBird list.

[cobirds] Stilt Sandpiper [Weld]

Hi all

Yesterday, I found two Stilt Sandpiper at Stewart's Pond (small pond south of large one).

My Nunn Breeding Bird Survey Route produced 45 species, highlights being: Bald Eagle (new species--no doubt the nesting pair not too far from where I found this guy); Blue Grosbeak; lots of Cassin's Sparrows; Ferruginous Hawk (on nest); both longspurs.

Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn

[cobirds] Common Merganser - Nesting Record - Douglas County

Wonderful observation by Charles Hundertmark and group in Jackson
County. Of interest, first known record of Common Merganser nesting was
at Chatfield State Park, June 18, 1986, reported by Jan Justice, and
Stan Justice.
We were in a kayak, in Hugh Kingery's Heronry, and female Common
Merganser with 14 flightless young swam by.

[cobirds] Common Merganser nest building in Jackson County

On the final day of a Denver Field Ornithologists field trip to North Park, the six remaining birders on the trip observed some interesting merganser behavior. We were at the bridge over the North Platte west of Cowdrey on JCR 6W. This may be the best place in the state to easily observe a Bank Swallow nest colony.

We were watching the swallows entering and leaving nest cavities in the large dirt bank, apparently in the nest building stage, and trying to spot the occasional Northern Rough-winged Swallow among the Bank Swallows. We were also listening the to Willow Flycatcher intermittently singing in the distance.

We finally turned our attention to Jean McClenathen's observation that she had seen a large gray bird with reddish head disappear into the bank north from the colony. With many eyes trained on the general area described, we finally saw what turned out to be a female Common Merganser fly to the tall bank along the river. The bird would repeatedly fly up to the same spot on the bank, possibly a crevice, to work for a short while and fly off, returning again minutes later. She appeared to be excavating dirt from a crevice or cavity.

After a few minutes, we saw a second female fly up to the bank a short distance from where the first bird was working. The second merganser was clinging to the bank below a large cavity and appeared to be working on it.

Common Mergansers are cavity nesters, most often known to nest in tree cavities. However, they are sometimes known to nest on ledges or in dirt banks. In the second Colorado BB Atlas, Mitchel and Versaw observed, "Breeding in cliffs probably happens more frequently than records suggest."

It appears that these two female mergansers were preparing nest cavities in the dirt bank.

[cobirds] Lost jacket found at Mitchek Ranch

Last call: found 5/21 at the scene of the Golden-crowned Warbler.

Men's "Large - Regular", LL Bean, dark gray-green.  In the pockets were a dark blue flannel hat with ear flaps and chin strap, "Head" (indicating the owner is a skiier?) gloves and a bag of Werther's Original candies (including three wrappers - doesn't get any better in life: enjoying a Werther's and a lifer simultaneously).  Found on the ground at the north end chokecherries.  May have been left the morning of 5/21 or prior to then.  If you know a person with a coat, hat and gloves that match the above, who doesn't monitor COBIRDS, and who went to see THE bird, let me know.  Being very personally experienced at gray, thin hair that falls out at a glance and comparing that to those few in the lining of the coat, I am guessing the owner of the coat to be over 50.

If I hear nothing in the next week or so, I am going to wash the coat and give it to a needy person downtown.
