The Snowy Owl first report three days ago by Robin Bay and communicated to COBIRDS by Ira Sanders was seen again yesterday by Janeal Thompson and me at the intersection of GR802 and Otero CR25. This location is best reached by going on SR109 from LaJunta about 10 miles south to GR802 (also called David Canyon Road, which is the major access to Vogel and Purgatoire Canyons on the Comanche National Grasslands). The intersection of 802 and CR25 is approximately 7.9 miles sw of SR109). The bird, possibly a first-winter female, was first reported on CR25 "south of N" on 12/16 and on 12/17 by Kim Score on eBird as being on 802 (note, RBA says 803, which is incorrect) about 6.8 miles w of SR109. In other words, it is moving around a bit but staying in the same general area. The landscape is brown, the bird mostly white. It seems to like bare humps near windmills and small man-made cattle water holes, sometimes posts. Please respect the bird.
Re the climate, three species of butterflies were at Van's Grove north of John Martin Res on December 13th, a fresh loggerhead shrike-impaled Plains Garter Snake was near Hasty on December 14, two Prairie Warblers were in CO on December 18th, and today, a Snowy Owl was perched on the prairie near cholla cactus.
