I just had to see it again and I'm happy to announce that the Red Phalarope was still present as of Tuesday (30th) afternoon at Timnath Reservoir.  Here is a photo taken on the 29th

COBirders,

Thank you to Bill and John for posts re Bobolink and Dickcissel in Fountain on Shumway about 0.5 km south of intersection with Squirrel Ck Rd.

I swung-by late today and had 3 male Bobolinks and a male and female Dickcissel. It’s a lush field.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 5/31/16

Nice third-to-last day of the season.  Highlight was an Olive-sided Flycatcher.  Caught in the same run as a couple of Western Wood-pewees, the OSFL seemed like a giant.  And he was beautiful.  The last of the Yellow Warblers are arriving - We banded 7, all but 1 were females that hatched last year (usually the last to arrive in the spring).

Here's the breakdown for the day:

Olive-sided Flycatcher 1
Western Wood-pewee 5 (These guys are having a great year - We've now caught twice as many as in any previous year at this station)
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 3
Yellow Warbler 9 new, 1 banded 2013
Common Yellowthroat 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Red-winged Blackbird 1

Open tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday, and then done for the season!

It is almost always better to visit early in the morning. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. There are school groups every weekday, arriving about 9:45. We aim to be closed by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy.

[cobirds] Picture Canyon Highlights, Baca County

My husband and I camped in Picture Canyon over the weekend. Rose-breasted Grosbeak male, American Redstart male, Painted Bunting male and female. Not sure how much these birds range, but I saw a single female at our camp, the pair about 3/4 mile down the trail near the cliffs with the gated slot cave, and late that evening a pair came through our campsite. What an incredibly beautiful place!

[cobirds] Crow Valley, Saturday May 28.

Sorry for the late report but I want camping right after this trip. My sis Lauren Burke and I and our daughters and two other gals birded the area Saturday. Trip list provided by my daughter, Anna. We also drove out on the birding tour a bit.

We also had a hummer that I didn't get a pic of and couldn't place.

About the size of a female Rufous- but her back had golden green feathers, little spotting under her chin, clear belly and very, very rufous sides. *no rufous in the tail. Any thoughts?

[cobirds] Ash-throated Flycatcher - Denver's Bear Creek Park

Although unable to locate the previously reported Red-headed Woodpecker at Denver's Bear Creek Park, I was fortunate enough to find an Ash-throated Flycatcher there this morning.  The bird was actively foraging and moved from the southwestern potion of the park eastward.   When last seen about 9:30AM, it had just reached the central woodlot where there are several stone walls.  Also present were Black-chinned and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, a Western Tanager,  Dusky and Olive-sided Flycatchers and  numerous Western Wood Pewees.

[cobirds] Yellow Breasted Chats on Rabbit Mountain

I hiked up to the Little Thompson overlook on Rabbit Mountain (north of Lyons in Boulder County) Sunday and Yellow Breasted Chats were everywhere! We had two displaying and others in the scrub doing their chattering and squawking.

The wildflowers up there are spectacular this year as well. Penstemons, vetches, galardia, Sticky Geranium, Ground Cherry, and yuccas putting up tall buds.

[cobirds] Nope: Whited-eyed Vireo - deKoevend (Arapahoe)

This morning (approx 8-9 a.m.), I went for a run at deKoevend Park, staying in the areas where the White-eyed Vireo has been or might likely be. I did not hear it. There were three other birders at the park. I spoke to one who also did not hear or see it this morning. Another posted on eBird and the White-eyed did not appear on his checklist. I didn't speak with the third birder, but I don't think he saw it either.

In 2014, Mary O'Connor reported a White-eyed Vireo along the Dry Creek Trail. Perhaps the bird has moved in that direction. Perhaps it has moved on. Or perhaps it was just not singing this morning while I was there. I'll likely walk my dog at the park tomorrow and will post if I hear or see the bird.

[cobirds] FYI Baltimore Oriole(2) [Private Residence, Fort Collins, Larimer]

Hi all

Sharing via Ann M. in Fort Collins:  "We had two male Baltimore Orioles hanging around one of our gardens this afternoon  By the time I was able to get my phone out - they flew off.  This is a first for this side (east of Lemay and a mile from Carpenter road) to see one in our 16 years of living here."

[cobirds] Re: North East Colorado, Sedgwick and Logan Counties

Update, I mistakenly  put in a Willow Flycatcher for some reason, I meant Great Created Flycatcher at Tamarack checklist. Should be correct now.

The road was muddy near here at area 6 and I chose not to risk driving the car through it. I also found a Northern Cardinal singing at Tamarack Pond area. After leaving Tamarack I drove to Red Lion but found Red Lion Road closed after taking exit 155. If anyone is heading there, you cannot get to Red Lion form exit 155 of I-76 and Red Lion Road. You will need to go to Sedgwick and head west on 138 to CR 95. It is closed at the private road. The first parking area at Red Lion is under water and has some Wilson's Phalarope. This state wildlife area had some Orchard Oriole along with a Bell's Vireo. I did not find much at Jumbo Reservoir but fond some Chimney Swifts flying high overhead at Sedgwick. Once I got home I heard Peetz had a tornado, north and west of where I was two hours after I left. Glade I missed that part. Here are all my checklists,

[cobirds] Jeffco Bobolink

Following up on eBird reports by Aaron Shipe and Mark Chavez, this afternoon I paid a visit to Apex Park in Arvada. The park is behind the Apex Recreation Center, and includes a large parcel of tall grass habitat that is perfect for bobolink (as well as redwings, of which there are many). After a short period of searching, I saw the bobolink larking and singing, and it subsequently perched within seventy-five feet of me. While I observed, the bird spent all of its time in the eastern half of the meadow.
If you want to try for the bird, Apex Park is on 72nd Ave. a half mile west of Ward Road, on the south side of 72nd. Park in the large lot behind the rec center and follow the paved bike path south and east.
