Cobirders,
Tim Smart and I headed down to the Lamar area this weekend. There are some really in depth reports from the area from this weekend already, but we had some different things that might be of interest.
On 4/24/15, we made a late night stop at the marsh east of Fort Lyon (Bent) at CR-16 and CR-HH to listen for rails. We had calling Soras, Virginia Rails, and a Great Horned Owl, but no Black Rails. Two other visits to the location also failed to produce any of the later. We did have a single White-faced Ibis and four Northern Pintail there on 4/26/15.
4/25/15 Began with my lifer Lesser Prairie-Chickens when we flared up five while driving south of Holly in southern Prowers County. We also had singing Grasshopper Sparrows and silent Vesper and White-Crowned Sparrows where we pulled over.
In Baca County between Two Buttes and Turks Pond Swa we had a single Mountain Plover and the first of many Burrowing Owls seen. A stop for urban birds in Sprinfield also produced a Broad-winged Hawk soaring overhead. Cottonwood Canyon had some great contributions to the trip including Ash-throated Flycatcher, a pair of Greater Roadrunners, Canyon Towhees, a male Western Bluebird, and a Swift Fox. On the way back out, we had a Cassin's Kingbird to the east.
Back in Bent County, we had two pairs of Piping Plovers, Baird's Sandpipers, Marbled Godwits and Scaled Quail at John Martin Res.
Cheraw res in Otero County offered at least twelve Snowy Plovers in addition to Pectoral, Least, semipalmated, and Baird's Sandpipers, Black-necked Stilts, American Avocets, and a Northern Pintail. A return visit on 4/26/15 added Greater Yellowlegs, seven White-faced Ibis, Clark's Grebes, and a Common Merganser.
Also on 4/26/15, we had a pair of Cattle Egrets at Lake Meredith (Crowley), a Horned Grebe and Snowy Plovers at Holbrook Lake (Otero).
