Today there was an immature male Cassin's finch around our feeders north of Boulder. After a long absence, we seem to be getting a few foothills birds, mt chickadee, Stellar's jay. An immature male black-chinned hummingbird was around regularly last week, but I haven't seen him the last three days.

[cobirds] Larimer County Black-throated Blue Warbler
I found a male Black-throated Blue Warbler this afternoon near the parking lot of the Northern Colorado Environmental Learning Center in eastern Fort Collins (Larimer). The "ELC", as most people know this place, by is located off East Drake Road about a mile east of Timberline. I believe it is covered in the Larimer County section on the County Birding link on the Colorado Field Ornithologist's website.
The bird was near the northwest corner of the ELC parking lot. Just a few feet north of the northwest corner of the parking lot is an outhouse and the start of the bike trail (which leads north to the suspension bridge). Directly across the bike trail from the outhouse (i.e. east) is a big thicket between the trail and the river. Winter Wrens have been in this same thicket in the past. The BTBW likes this thicket, where it spent the entire afternoon getting aphids, and possibly leafhoppers, from a few different plants including Virginia Creeper and honeysuckle. It also goes up from time to time into the boxelders and willows overtopping this thicket, again probably after aphids, and possibly midges. It is very quiet. I may have heard it giving a junco-like chip a few times, but not often.
Ken Ecton and I will be out there tomorrow morning at 7:30am if anyone wants to give it a go. It would be a good night to fly, but who knows.

Yesterday evening my husband saw a black-chinned hummingbird on our feeder. I was grateful to see it feeding on our still plentiful flowers this morning. The hummer appeared to have plenty of fat stored on its little body which I am happy about considering it's so late.
This is a great reminder to your keep your feeders up for the stragglers. They need all help they can get for their long travels over a drought torn land.

[cobirds] ABA BOY at TCR and USAFA 10/1 - El Paso Cty
Hey, all.
Can you tell by all the acronyms that I am retired Army?
Translation: American Birding Association Bird of the Year (the Evening Grosbeak) was at Turkey Creek Ranch and the United States Air Force Academy today, October 1st.
They are removing the picnic tables from the ranch for winter storage today, so I do not know how much longer we will be able to bird there.
It was cool to see two small groups of the birds today. When we first pulled in to TCR this morning at 7:45am, we saw three Lewis's Woodpeckers before we could even park. Would this be a repeat of our 7 woodpecker day of a few weeks ago? No, but we did see five species including one we did not get last time. Along with the 8 Lewis's, we saw a dozen Northern Flickers, two Downy WPs, a male and female Williamson's SS, and one Yellow-bellied SS.
Robins were in abundance - probably close to 300 on the ranch. There were three jays - Blue, Steller's, and a lot of Western Scrub. We had two dozen Wild Turkeys, half-a-dozen Townsend Solitaires, lots of White-crowned sparrows, a Lincoln's sparrow and both Western Bluebirds and Mountain Bluebirds. Another bird in large numbers was the Dark-eyed Juncos, mostly "pink-sided".
Finishing up a little after 11:00am, we headed for the Kettle lakes at the Academy. There we had the Evening Grosbeaks, Cedar Waxwings, abundant Pygmy Nuthatches, Mountain Chickadees, and a bunch of Yellow-rumped Warblers.
A total of over 40 species for the day.
All in all, fun birding in beautiful fall scenery and weather.

Hi COBirders,
Full report to follow, about 35 birds banded today at the RMBO banding station at Chico Basin Ranch.
Brandon P. already reported most of the good stuff we had today, I made him spend 90 minutes looking for the Black-throated Blue Warbler, as I had JUST caught, checked, and released it when he came around the corner and asked if I'd seen it. Oops! Eventually sighted and photographed.
Then while banding the Eastern (VERY pale blue) White-breasted Nuthatch, we heard the Pygmy Nuthatch- and it was in a net 20 minutes later, and also banded.
Besides that, most the banding today was of Gambell's White-crowned Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Orange-crowned Warblers. There were many flickers, sapsuckers, and solitaires around, too, but not caught.

Hi all,
I birded Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) today.
The Pueblo County side was slow, a few Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned Warblers, also Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a Marsh Wren at the Headquarters and Rose Pond.
The El Paso Coutny side was better, my highlights follow.
Black-throated Blue Warbler - 1 male, still around
Pygmy Nuthatch - 1 (my first for the Ranch)
Eastern White-breasted Nuthatch - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Red-naped Sapsucker - 1 female
Barn Owl - 1
Sora - 1 (walking around in some dry weeds)
Brown Thrasher - 1
Other stuff:
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Townsend's Solitaire, Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrush, Interior West White-breasted Nuthatch, among other birds.

From Morrison drive 4 miles west on C-74 to park entrance on Left. Observe the speed limits. Half day Trip. Bring snacks, water, bins and good walking shoes for an approximately 2.5 to 3 miles hike. Dress in layers for a fall day. Feeder monitoring will follow at the Bear Creek Restaurant. Please phone leader to register. This trip has a limited number of participants so registration is a must.
The DFO Field Trip for Sunday, October 7 will be to Fort Collins Area Ponds led by Paul Slingsby (303-442-3728). Please notify leader by phone or e-mail (psalingsby At comcast.net). Meet to carpool from parking lot south of 120th and east of Huron at 0730. This can be accessed via I-25 exit 223, go west on 120th Ave to Huron and south until you see the parking lot on the left. Park close to Huron. Trip will return to carpool meeting area by 4 pm. Bring water, and sack lunch and plan for variable weather. Scopes and 2-way radios will be useful. plan on one or two walks of a mile or so.
