Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies on Thursday, June 29 from 5 - 6 p.m. MST for a special webinar with Scott Weidensaul and Bird Conservancy Avian Ecologist Marion Clément! The Northern Saw-whet Owl is at once one of the most widespread but little-known raptors in North America, found from the northern edge of the boreal forest in Canada and Alaska to the high-elevation oak and pine forests of central Mexico, and migrates through even those regions where it does not breed. For more than 25 years, Scott Weidensaul has been involved in efforts to better understand this pint-sized woodland owl using banding, radio telemetry and even radar. He'll discuss what his research has revealed, how he and a couple of colleagues help coordinate similar studies by more than 125 banding stations around North America through Project Owlnet, and what new technologies may reveal about this enigmatic and — to be honest — really cute raptor. Scott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist "Living on the Wind:" Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds" and his most recent book, the New York Times bestseller "A World on the Wing." Among his other books is "Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Carribean." His research includes studying bird migration in Alaska with the National Park Service; co-directing Project SNOWstorm, a study of snowy owl winter ecology; and helping build the Motus Wildlife Tracking System throughout the East. He lives in New Hampshire.
