Some more cool stuff seen over the last week:
Key:
SW = Sawhill \ Walden Boulder Country
PL = Plaster Reservoir Broomfield
AM = Alex and Michael's Pond Broomfield
BR = Brunner Reservoir Broomfield
BL =Broomfield Library Pond
BG = City of Boulder General
BC = Boulder County General
ST = Stearns Lake Boulder County
SR = Sandstone Ranch Weld County
SI = Sienna Reservoir Broomfield
WL = Trails Park South \ West Lake
L = Lageman Reservoir Boulder County
American White Pelican - SW, PL, AM, BL, BC, ST, WL - numbers keep changing as flocks move from place to place. Sawhills had over a hundred a few days ago. West Lake has the best photo ops due to the small size of the lake.
Double Crested Cormorant - SW, PL, BC, SI, WL - large numbers at Sienna Reservoir
Great Blue Heron - SW, PL, AM, BC, ST, SR, SI - the rookery at Walden is very active. The rookery at Crane Hollow Road seems to be in collapse - only two nests were active last week.
American Avocet - SW, AM, L, SI, - up to 24 at Alex and Michael's pond a few days ago.
Great Egret - AM - one at Alex and Michael's Pond for a few days, then gone.
Snowy Egret - AM, PL - 4 at Plaster Reservoir, 1 at Alex and Michael's
Sharp Shined Hawk - behind Legacy High School about 6 days ago, flying. Broomfield.
Cooper's Hawk - AM - calls, flying. They nested in this area last year.
Greater Yellowlegs - AM, ST, SW, L - still persisting in these locations.
LONG BILLED CURLEW - 4 near Stearns Lake. From Dillion Road take road 104 towards Steans Lake, but pull over (well off the road) as you cross over NW E-470. Looks in massive plowed fields to the east with a scope. Calls. Foraging in the fields.
White Throated Swift - Boulder Mountain Park near the Fern Canyon Trail. Several calling.
YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER - 7 days ago in Table Mesa neighborhood, Boulder. Immature male. Black throat patches are filling in, around the bright red throat patch. I was unable to relocate this bird several days later.
EASTERN PHOEBE - eastern Boulder County in several locations. Look where bridges and footbridges cross over running streams and ditches.
BLACK PHOBE - no comment
BOHEMIAN WAXWING - in Louisville locations already posted by others. I saw only two in the Fir Street neighborhood last Saturday (April 15th). Neighbor told me that most were gone. Supply of crabapples has been depleted.
Barn Swallow - 4/17/23 - at AM and at ST
Northern Rough Winged Swallow - eastern Boulder County
Ruby Crowned Kinglet - in the Bear Creek complex behind NCAR in Boulder. At least 4, foraging, and one singing.
Audubon's Warbler - SW and AM - about 12 in each location
Myrtle Warbler - SW - about 6 with Audubon's Warblers
White Crowned Sparrow - Several at Sandstone Ranch, in Weld County
Brown Headed Cowbird - 1 male at SI
Phenomena:
Belted Kingfisher chasing a Northern Rough Winged Swallow persistently in eastern Boulder County. This Kingfisher perhaps has too much spring testosterone.
Bushtits - gathering spiderweb for nesting materials. Boulder, Broomfield.
American Kestrel pair and Red Tailed Hawk park behind Legacy High School in Broomfield. Attacks and counter attacks. These two pairs hate each other, and this is the second year they've been going at it. "Why can't we all just get along?"
Gather nesting materials: Steller's jays, Black-Billed Magpies, Blue Jays, Bushtits, Great Blue Herons, Common Grackles, Starlings, House Finches, Robins, etc. etc.
Notes:
Sienna Reservoir in Broomfield is being drained, and is at about 1/5 capacity. This will go on until the reservoir is completely drained soon. There is major construction going on at both sides of the reservoir - east and west. Nonetheless, their are large numbers of great blue herons, cormorants, ring billed gulls, various ducks, common mergansers, - all feasting on the fish. See it before the water is all gone.
Watch for: wild plum thickets will start blooming in about 10 days (guesstimate). When this happens look for orange-crowned warblers, house wrens, yellow-rumped warblers, MacGillivray's warblers, Virginia's warblers, Nashville warblers, Townsend's warblers, Black-throated gray warblers, and others.
Happy birding.
