Re: [cobirds] Ice birds at Ken Caryl, JeffCo

Yes! Very chilly! At our house in FOCO, a brisk -17° this morning!
I noticed the same thing on those species and American Goldfinch, Flickers, and a Townsend Solitaire as well. Chilly overnight for our feathered friends!

It is very chilly here, of course: -13 this morning with 3-4 inches of snow. Otherwise it is clearing to a be pretty (frozen) day. This morning I noticed a number of birds of several species with what seemed to be accumulations of ice on their backs and sometimes on their nape and crown. I've attached some low light early morning iphone snaps that show a bit. I've not noticed that before on very cold days, although thankfully we don't get many as cold as now.  Species bearing the little ice "backpacks" were Dark-eyed Juncos, House Finch, Red-winged Blackbird, and Spotted Towhee. Presumably snow is falling on them and sticking, or it gathered as ice on them overnight? It doesn't fluff off, nd at the same time they do not seem too bothered. Maybe this is not unusual and I've not noticed? Maybe I need more coffee.
