It was sunny and calm for our first 3 hours this morning. Then the clouds rolled in, the wind picked up and the biggest flocks of Yellow-rumped Warblers of the morning came through, making the last hour a little wild. We ended with a total of 59 Yellow-rumpeds, for a season total of 121, which is more than we've ever caught at Chatfield (previous high was 114 in 2009). This follows our highest count in a season at Barr last fall. With a smattering of other species, including our first-of-season Warbling Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, Virginia's Warbler and Common Yellowthroat, we ended the morning with 71 new birds. BIG day for Chatfield!

We will be open daily, WEATHER PERMITTING, through May 31, except for May 10-11 and 27. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy. Registration is required for all weekend visitors; see the Denver Audubon website to sign up. Individuals may visit weekdays without registering before the school groups arrive, which is usually around 10 a.m.
