Hi all
Super day on Raptor Alley in people, birds and weather! I led a private Boulder "raptoring" group to explore Raptor Alley hoping to show them birds they can obviously see in Boulder but up here they are more "mass quantity". Had some great shows, too, Dark morph Ferruginous Hawk, Red-taileds aerial courting, Ferruginous aerialing courting, Prairie Falcons riding winds just above our heads, eagle and owls on nest. Show stealer was the unexpected Sandhill Cranes!
We saw 52 total raptors (photos):
- American Kestrel - 9
- Red-tailed Hawk - 20
- Ferruginous Hawk - 7
- Prairie Falcon - 3
- Rough-legged Hawk - 1
- Golden Eagle - 2
- Bald Eagle - 3 (one on active Nunn nest (4 years now))
- Northern Harrier - 5
- Great Horned Owl - 2 (both on active nests)
Spring migrants:
- Sandhill Crane - 3
- Mountain Bluebird - 25+
- Redhead
- Northern Pintail
- Ring-necked Duck
This morning the usual Wellington SWA resting spot for Sandhill Cranes had their first visitors, 53 cranes!
Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn
