[cobirds] Colorado CBC Results are all in

You can now see the results for all 51 Colorado Christmas Bird Counts that were held this winter, Dec 14-Jan 5.  I am reviewing all the counts, still trying to get documentation or photos for some species and counting up the species for each count, to make sure the number reported is correct.  I'll write a summary after I finish reviewing all the counts, which I have until 15 April to do that.  If you see anything on any CBC Results, I that I need to look at, let me know.

Thanks to all the Colorado CBC Compilers for getting their count data entered into the CBC Website by the deadline, which is today!!  I did a count of species found on Colorado CBCs last week, and I think I counted 199 species, I believe we'll make it to 200 species again, plus some count week only species, that weren't found on any CBC during count day.  Thanks to all the participants who were able to help with Colorado CBCs this year, and past years.

To view the results for this year go to this website, click the United States tab, and Colorado tab, and you'll see all the counts.

[cobirds] African Collared-Dove; JeffCo

Hello!

Earlier today my ears perked up to the song of an African Collared-Dove providing an interesting change from all of the Eurasians around.  I was unable to see the bird and haven't ebirded it but it sounded like it was along Goldco Circle near Ford St in Golden.  Not the most exciting find for many but yet another record along the Front Range.

Also of note in area was a beautiful adult Goshawk circling low around Ford and Iowa yesterday afternoon.

Cheers,
Tim Mitzen

[cobirds] Boulder County varia, Feb. 22-26

Hey, folks. A few odds and ends from around Boulder County these past 5 days:

Today, Tues., Feb. 26, at Erie Reservoir, a fresh definitive alternate California gull.

Yesterday, Mon. Feb. 25, at Sombrero Marsh, at least 8 recently returned northern pintails.

Sun., Feb. 24, at Hecla Pond, an extreme hooded merganser.

Sat., Feb. 23, along Boulder Creek in downtown Boulder, absolutely fantastic studies of American dippers. Like this bird, which was singing, dipping, diving, feeding, and flashing its freaky white eyelids all at the same time. Anyhow, if you want to get great studies of dippers, the time is right now, I would say, with singing birds (both males and female!) on creeks and rivers all up and down the Front Range. The closer to the base of the foothills, the better.

Fri., Feb. 22, at Erie Reservoir, adult and first-cycle Thayer gulls, an interesting large gull that flew off before I could get a picture, and all three mergansers.

Over at Greenlee Preserve, songsters these past several days have included northern flickers, spotted towhees, and American bushtits.

Nick Komar and I saw a female (or juvenile?) Long-tailed Duck at Fossil Creek Reservoir around mid-day today. It was seen earlier in the day by another birder and may be the same individual bird reported at this site earlier in February. We saw it from the pier near the parking lot. More than a dozen other duck species were also seen.

My third sighting in 2 days. At the White Water Activity Area 2307 Devereux Rd just east of the little spill way. Stays under most of the time. Must be good fishing there.

[cobirds] Horned Grebe in Glenwood Springs

Got photos of a Horned Grebe in the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs. EBird doesn't show any other sightings of Horned Grebe in Garfield County.

Is it way early, late or just a resident?

[cobirds] Tues. Feb. 26, Program: Why Mountain Lions Thrive in Colorado

Brought to you by Boulder County Audubon Society, 7:00 p.m., Universalist Unitarian Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave. Boulder

Why Mountain Lions Thrive in Colorado

Come in from the cold and join Boulder County Audubon on February 26, 2019 to learn about Colorado's cougars and view stunning wild photography and videography.

David Neils, wildlife conservationist, will share how he learned to view the landscape as a lion, and now captures completely wild footage of these majestic apex predators on a weekly basis. He'll also provide tips for being "lion" safe and put

your risk in perspective, realizing that grocery store parking lots and I-25 are both a thousand times more dangerous than anything he does in lion country. You'll see jaw-dropping footage of completely wild wildlife, most of it from Northern Colorado.

David Neils grew up in northwest Montana, learned outdoor survival skills before the age of ten and by age 11 was backpacking for 10 days at a time in the Cabinet Wilderness Area, without adults. His parents gave him the greatest gift–figuring life out in the outdoors without adults hovering over his every move. Almost all of his exploration during childhood was off-trail.

After being face-bumped by a tom (male lion) while sleeping on a ridge in the Never Summer Wilderness of Colorado, David took advantage of the encounter to leaned in and has since spent  14 years spending time in lion country. His focus through Wild Nature Media is supporting wildlife conservation, education and research. David also holds private one-on-one workshops for those who want to duplicate his work with apex predators and other wildlife.

When: Tuesday February 26, 2019.   Socializing begins as 7:00 PM with the presentation starting at 7:15 PM.

Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder, 5001 Pennsylvania Avenue, off 55th St. between Arapahoe and Baseline.
