[cobirds] Birds on Valmont Reservoir

Hi all -

I have been frequenting Valmont Reservoir the last few weeks, since I saw several Loons out there earlier in November.  Lately, there has been a Common Loon and a Pacific Loon hanging around, I managed to get pictures of both of them the other day, including one shot of the two of them in one scope view.  I have been noticing what I thought were three Horned Grebes in the mix of Mergansers as well.  I wasn't completely sure that they were Horned Grebes, since I was catching a hint of yellow on the lower bill.  I went back today (since it is CBC count week) to see if I could get a better look.  Well, as luck would have it, a couple of them came closer to shore, and I managed to get a better look at the two of them.  Turns out, they are Red-Necked Grebes.  Pictures show a dark cheek and crown, yellow bill with slight downturn towards the tip, and a whiteish ear-patch.  Non-breeding adult plumage, according to Sibley.  Who am I to argue?
Anyway, hopefully they will still be there tomorrow for the count.

Good Birding -
