Greetings!
Shadow is on the move! Who is Shadow? She is an Osprey that nests near Grand Lake at Shadow Mountain Reservoir. We outfitted her with a satellite tracking unit in June of 2013 and again this year in June. At the moment she is heading toward her wintering area. The last location fix from noon on September 5th shows her in southeast Colorado. She began migrating on September 4th. We don't know where she is today but she could be following the Arkansas River toward Texas as she did in 2013. I will let you know where she is as soon as I receive the next update from Argos!
Timeline of migration so far:
September 4th (12:00) - west of Tabernash
September 4th (15:00) - traveled approximately 65 miles to southwest of Castle Rock
September 4th (18:00) - west of Colorado Springs and east of Pikes Peak
September 5th (09:00) - 25 miles southeast of the last location fix and southeast of Colorado Springs
September 5th (12:00) - 34 miles south of last location fix and southeast of Pueblo
In 2013, Shadow didn't begin migrating until September 15th and it took her nine days to travel 1,100 miles to her wintering site just south of Texas in Mexico on the Gulf of Mexico coast (at Laguna Madre Biosphere Reserve). It will very interesting to see if she goes to the same place this year to spend the winter!

Enjoy!
