Was near 90 degrees today in Lamar. Beautiful day for sun screen field trials, rather slow for migrants.
Riverside Cemetery on the north side of Maple Avenue in northeastern Lamar (Prowers):
Field Sparrow (estimate 5, could have been more, mostly along the ditch that runs along the north side of the cemetery, from the nw corner due north, and along the north side of the alfalfa field just north of the cemetery. All appeared to be western subspecies. The lipstick shade they think is in this autumn is "bubblegum".
Still a few Lincoln's Sparrows and Savannah Sparrows in the ragweeds, same location as the Field Sparrows.
Lower Queens Res (Kiowa):
Canvasback (1)
Black-crowned Night-Heron (i)
Big influx of Gadwalls and Northern Pintails
Marsh Wren (heard only)
Wilson's Snipe (1)
Upper Queens Res (Kiowa):
Osprey (1)
Herring Gull (2i)
Pectoral Sandpiper (3)
American Pipit (several)
Long-billed Dowitcher (1 flying overhead, heard well)
*White-fronted Goose (5) perhaps the same small group reported the other day 60 miles west of here by Chris R? Very unusual for this area, particularly this early in autumn.
Lesser Yellowlegs (5)
Chestnut-collared Longspur (30)
Longspur sp. (2 seen and heard only from a distance, short rattle flight call, probably McCown's, maybe Lapland, remotely maybe Smith's)
Nee Noshe Res (Kiowa):
Osprey (1)
Common Loon (1)
Thurston Res south side boatramp:
Swamp Sparrow (1 heard only)
Marsh Wren (1 heard only)
Canvasback (1)
American Pipit (1)
