There were 8 sandhill cranes over the Monte Vista wildlife refuge this morning. Quite a few other birds, especially water fowl, none that were unexpected.
There are a lot of plays along highway 285 between Saguache and Monte Vista but there aren't a lot of places to stop along the side of the road. Flocks of ibis (presumably white face although I didn't see much white at the base of the beak. ) were flying in. it was difficult to study them because it would be wick, drive by birding.
I got a kick out of watching a juvenile western grebe bugging his napping parent for food. The adult was tucked in trying to sleep. After a while, without lifting her head or otherwise moving, the adult reached out with a leg to her side and kicked the juvenile in the head. Kids, what are you gonna do?
