[cobirds] Barr Banding Station Update, 9/25/15

Another leisurely fall banding day at Barr. The coolest bird of the morning was a Wilson's Warbler who decided to demonstrate his fly-catching abilities. This fly (which looked to me like one we'd swat at in our kitchens) got a little too close to the beak of the WIWA in my hand, and the bird just nailed it.  FAST.  The bird seemed almost as surprised as the humans watching, and after a few moments dropped it - very dead - on the banding station table.  He was one of only 5 new WIWAs today, as the mix of species becomes more fall-like:

Warbling Vireo 1
Black-capped Chickadee 1
House Wren 3
Hermit Thrush 2
Brown Thrasher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 2
Wilson's Warbler 5
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1

We are open 6 days per week, weather permitting, through Sunday, October 11. Our next closed day is Thursday, 10/1. We are opening nets at 6:30, and will run until noon or whenever it gets too hot or too windy or too whatever. School groups arrive about 9:30 a.m. most weekdays.
