[cobirds] Jackson County - grebes, ibis, phalaropes and other arrivals

I visited Jackson County Tuesday through today for early arrivals. At the Moose Visitor Center, most entertaining was a singing Fox Sparrow. Snipe were also present in the willows and a Red-naped Sapsucker was persistently drumming. A single male Pine Grosbeak was at the feeders along with many of the usual suspects. Dipped on rosy-finches.

The vicinity of the Aspen Campground (Lodgepole and Aspen, live and dead) had a good bit of woodpecker activity including at least 6 Red-naped Sapsuckers as well as Hairy and Downy Woodpecker and flickers.

The Arapaho NWR tour loop has good water with reasonable shore. Along with 29 avocets, there were 2 Marbled Godwits (also present at several other lakes in North Park), 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Long-billed Dowitchers and 5 Wilson's Phalaropes (also present at several other locations). 19 Eared Grebes, 3 Franklin's Gulls, and 2 Swainson's Hawks were observed. A single Vesper Sparrow was singing.

The area just west of the Jackson Lions Club Wetland was interesting. An old Bald Eagle nest in a cottonwood there has been occupied by a Canada Goose. In a cottonwood adjacent to this tree, six or so Great Blue Herons were beginning to build nests, though it was hard to see if there was much of a start Tuesday. By Wednesday evening, the nests were well along. On Thursday, a pair of crows had begun building a nest in the same tree. Winnowing snipe in the same area.

On Wednesday, Walden Reservoir was teaming. The usual ducks were present. Among them were 371 Eared Grebes and 219 Western Grebes with some desultory courtship in both species. Double-crested Cormorants and American White Pelicans were on nests as were a few of the 385 California Gulls. 2 of 8 Black-crowned Night Herons were at nests and one Snowy Egret was in the heronry. 4 other Snowies were along the Illinois River. 13 Western Willets were back as were 4 Forster's Terns. Marsh Wrens and Vesper Sparrows were singing. Migrants included 6 Marbled Godwits and 5 Lopng-billed Dowitchers.

A lone Common Loon was on Cowdrey Res, where a Sandhill Crane was also heard overhead.

Most interesting at Lake John were three rafts of Eared Grebes totaling 187 birds. Eared Grebes don't generally nest on Lake John proper, but on the adjacent Lake John Annex which offers the emergent vegetation they nest for anchoring nests. So either these birds are migrants making a stopover or newly arrived breeding birds resting before moving to the Annex. 81 Western Grebes were also present.

Another 32 Eared Grebes were present on the Annex as were 29 Western Grebes. Most spectacular was a flock of about 45 Marbled Godwits. Two Western Willets were heard.

Pole Mountain Lake this morning produced the sole White-faced Ibis of the trip.

[cobirds] Barn Owl at Barr Lake (Adams County)

A Barn Owl flew out, then in & out of the area near the banding station today around 1PM today. I was not able to get any photos as it happened very quickly! I was tipped off by another birder, so I was somewhat prepared. It was stunning!

Good birding!

[cobirds] RMBO Banding at Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso Co.

The Spring banding season at Chico Basin Ranch opened April 23rd.   The herculean task of clearing tumbleweeds from the net lanes proved not insurmountable for CBR staff and many courageous volunteers who came out to do battle so that the station could be opened.   My sincere thanks to all of you for the truly amazing work.

Thus far we have banded 116 birds of 18 species.  We caught our first-ever Prairie Warbler on Tuesday and the bird was seen again today.  Also today, we caught a female Hooded Warbler, our 11th individual since 2002.   The first two Swainson's Thrushes arrived on Tuesday.  Our earliest capture date for this species was April 26th, during 2005.  Since then, we've had April Swainson's again in 2006, 2007, and 2008 only; most show up after May 10th.

[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Update, 4/29/15

Very slow day, but we had our first warblers:

House Wren 3
Orange-crowned Warbler 2 (FOS in 2014 was 5/9)
Common Yellowthroat 1 (FOS in 2014 was 5/6)
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

Last year's first warblers were Yellow-rumpeds.  They were around the station today, but up high in the trees.

We will be open daily, weather permitting, through May 31, EXCEPT for May 8-9. We will be opening nets at 6:30, and should have the first birds
back at the station by 7:30. We will close by noon most days; earlier if it is too hot. On most days, you will see more birds if you come early, and will
be more likely to avoid crowds. On weekdays, we have school groups visiting every day, and they usually arrive at the station sometime between
9:30 and 10 a.m.

[cobirds] Nashville Warbler --Jeffco

Today, while having my morning coffee I noticed a small bird bathing in my water feature.  It turned out to be a male Nashville Warbler.  The bird stayed in the backyard for nearly two hours bathing and feeding(aphids?) in the hawthorn.  The bird was still around when leaving for work around 9am.  Photos of the bird can be seen below:

[cobirds] Big Johnson Res, ElPaso CO

In addition to the regularly occurring migrants (numerous) at Big Johnson, this morning we refound the Snowy Plover and the
Whimbrel that were found yesterday plus 2 Semipalmated Plovers, all in the north-east area of the reservoir.

[cobirds] Re: El Paso county --- Snowy Plover

Mark,

I saw the Caspian Tern come in at Prospect Lake around noon.  It made one dive to grab a fish, circled the Lake once and then circled up and away.  So it was a very brief visit at Prospect Lake, but a lifer for me that was really cool.  When I saw the report at Big Johnson, I thought it may have been the same bird.  I wasn't sure if there were other Caspian Terns aloft that the bird I saw joined, because when it was spiraling up, there were three other birds aloft that looked similar in wing shape, but I wasn't confident of their ID.

Thanks for he list of birds at Big Johnson.

Cheers,

[cobirds] What I saw Tuesday at Walden ponds Boulder

Hi Cobirders, A large group of Tuesday birders found a lot of birds on a nice day around Walden ponds. I stayed with my rolator around Cottonwood Marsh
which had a great assortment of birds. I saw 18 species including White Pelicans 17, Spotted Sandpiper 1, Killdeer 3, White-faced Ibis, Blue-winged Teal 1,
Great-tailed Grackle 2, and Osprey all new for me for the year that now totals 86!

The trail from the boardwalk east to the senior fishing pond is lightly graveled and is protected by a mound of new dirt with about 8 huge gray white rocks
spaced evenly and a crew of Boulder open space were planting shrubs between them.

Check the Tuesday Birders report for all they saw.

Birding is great!

[cobirds] Cameron Pass Boreal Owls

Last evening, Mike McCloy and I decided to head up to Cameron Pass to look for Boreal Owls.  We parked at the parking area for the Nokhu Crags and hiked to the east and then got on a trail that took us up to the Michigan Ditch Road around the time it was getting dark.  It wasn't completely dark before we heard our first Boreal Owl which we ended up getting excellent looks at after a lot of patience. We heard a total of three Boreal Owls in the valley to the southeast of where Highway 14 makes the sharp turn from running North-South to East-West on the Jackson County side of the pass.  These birds were all about a mile from the nearest point on Highway 14, but it might be possible to hear them on a still night.  We did not hear any more owls on the hike back until we got to the parking area where we heard another bird.  At one point the bird was very close to our car, but it seemed to be moving around a lot and only calling occasionally.

Good Birding!

[cobirds] Wilson'sPhalarope,Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, White-facedIbis,Franklin'sGulls & Peregrine Falcon in Canon City area

The flooded agricultural fields in the Canon City and Florence areas continue to bring in migrating shorebirds and waterbirds.  Today there were 4 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and several White-faced Ibis east Florence.  Yesterday 2 Wilson's Phalarope swam in a flooded field there.  While the numbers of Franklin's Gulls has decreased at least 25 or so remain and may be found in flooded fields in Canon City or on our Valco Ponds (seems it does not matter that this is private property as I have seen 3 more birders trespassing to look at birds there).  Yesterday a Peregrine Falcon stopped by our Valco Ponds to look for prey but left circling the ponds without going after anything.  Photos of these species are up on my Birds and Nature blog along with a brief discussion of their flooded habitats in this area..

The Eastern Phoebe sitting on eggs is still sitting tight, she picked a very protected area that provided shelter from the copious rain showers we had the past two days.

[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Update, 4/28/15

Finally got back to banding, after 2 days of rain!  Another typical early spring day:

House Wren 5
Spotted Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 4
Brown-headed Cowbird 2
American Goldfinch 2 (a M and F; caught side-by-side in the net. After we released him, he waited for her in a nearby tree)

We will be open daily, weather permitting, through May 31, EXCEPT for May 8-9. We will be opening nets at 6:30, and should have the first birds back
at the station by 7:30. We will close by noon most days; earlier if it is too hot. On most days, you will see more birds if you come early, and will
be more likely to avoid crowds. On weekdays, we have school groups visiting every day, and they usually arrive at the station sometime between
9:30 and 10 a.m.
