DFO Field Trips:
The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, October 12, will be to Brett Gray Ranch in Lincoln County led by Mark Amershek (303-329-8646) and Bruce Neuman. Trip will be limited to 8 persons. RSVP to Mark at 303-329-8646 or by e-mail at mamershek AT msn.com. Will meet and carpool at 0545 at the King Soopers parking lot on Fountain Parkway (just east of I-25) in Castle Rock. Will leave at 0600 sharp. We need volunteers to drive (high clearance, 4-wheel-drive vehicles), so let Mark know if you could drive.
Brett Gray is a 49,000 acre Nature Conservancy working ranch in Lincoln County. It is about 100 miles from Castle Rock. The ranch will be birded by driving ranch roads with stops to bird on level open areas (ponds, wetland grassland, and small creeks). This ranch is similar in habitat to Chico Basin Ranch, with two dam ponds and wooded areas. There are no restroom facilities at the ranch or nearby, so we will stop in East Colorado Springs on our drive down and again on our way back; plan accordingly
This will be an all-day trip so bring water and lunch. Scopes would be handy but not necessary. Two-way radios per car would be helpful. Will bird until 1600 and should be back in Castle Rock around 1800.
The DFO birding event for Sunday, October 13 will be THE BIG SIT at Chatfield State Park led by Joey Kellner (303-978-1748). Parks pass required. Meet at Heron Overlook at Chatfield SP. From Wadsworth Blvd. entrance, go right at the T and continue around the reservoir. After you cross the South Platte River make a hard left into the large parking lot labeled Heronry Overlook. At the far right corner, a trail leads down to the Heron Overlook.
Come and join Joey Kellner and other recruits at any time after dawn. Stay for an hour, all morning, or all day. Drop by whenever you like or volunteer to substitute for Big Sit leaders for an hour or two. Bring chairs, breakfast, lunch, dinner, picnics, coffee, etc. Bring binoculars, scopes, field guides, and other essential birding equipment.
Good Birding,
Joyce Takamine
