Today, David Dowell and I started in Logan County, popped over to Phillips County, then back to Logan, and finally to Weld.
First of all: Welcome to fall migration. Wilson's Phalaropes appeared in a number of places where they were not present a week ago, all females, representing migration (or at least dispersal) after leaving their male mates to raise their young. Also we had 3 LB CURLEWS at N Sterling Reservoir, Logan.... which flew off to the south with all apparent haste.
RARITIES:
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER: Probably first year bird in near full-snazzy alternate plumage at a small pond off CO-6 near the end of Washington County Road R. This is only the second June record in eBird
Apparent EASTERN YB CHAT: At Tamarack Ranch, eastern portion. See Sibley or other major guides for differences from western birds. All important marks point towards Eastern, and the bird was a bit startling. Per Pyle, the breed from e. SD, NE, KS, so one showing up in a place with a proclivity towards eastern birds is, perhaps, not a startling as initially might seem. A nearby singing bird sounded odd... not sure if that means anything or not.
BELL'S VIREO: It seems a superb year for this species. After finding 14 at Tamarack in late May, today we had Bell's as far west as two locations near Sterling (Bravo SWA and where Logan County Road 40 crosses the S Platte River). Also, one was singing at Lions Fishing Pond at Holyoke. Nearly all summer records of this species in CO are along the S Platte and Republican River drainages.
AMERICAN REDSTART and GREEN HERON: Singing male redstart and frequently calling Green Heron near pond (near "manager's residence") at Tamarack.
GC FLYCATCHER: 4 at Bravo SWA just e. of Sterling
CANVASBACK: male at Stewarts' Pond along Weld County Road 46 near LaSalle.
We heard 15+ towhees at Tamarack, but only could track down 3, all Spotted; no hybrids or Easterns.
Also, on 12 June (Sorry for the late post) there were 2 WHIMBREL at Lower Latham (the shorebird ponds were fully dried up as of today, alas) and a STILT SANDPIPER at Loloff Reservoir (both locations in Weld). At WCR 59 pond, near Kersey, Weld, there has been a female N PINTAIL with a brood of about 10 chicks.
That's the news for today
Good Birding
