RE: [cobirds] Sign up for Christmas Bird Counts now available

As Bill pointed out the CBC site is up and running.  Well, "running" is perhaps too generous a term as the site is VERY slow (and likely to get slower as more people try to use it).
Extreme patience is required if you, like Bill, are trying to sign up for multiple counts.
After clicking on the count you desire, you need to wait for it to "upload" to the list of counts you are signing up for.  If you are impatient, and click repeatedly on the check box, you run the risk of sending the compiler a cancellation notice after you have signed up for their count.
If this happens (and you will know, since the CBC admin site sends you confirmation emails on every count you sing up for or cancel), I'd suggest you contact the compiler directly to straighten it out.

Another glitch which Bill and other overachievers may have noted is that the list of sites you have signed up for is apparently limited to 5 counts, thereby thwarting your effort to become a double digit CBCer.  Apparently you are actually being listed (as you and the compiler will get a confirmation email) but it does not show up on the list on the website.  Here again (I'm told) if you repeatedly click in frustration you may run the risk of cancelling your previous (but invisible) registration.

Numerous counts still have not posted their dates (possible because compilers have found the CBC Website less than user friendly?) and a few counts do not allow you to sign up on-line for reasons which elude me.

And finally, for those of you who have not yet signed up for the Dec 31 Rawhide CBC for fear of missing their New Year's Eve party, we'll be finished before 2 PM giving you plenty of time to make it to the ball.

Subject: [cobirds] Sign up for Christmas Bird Counts now available

Cobirders,

National Audubon has now opened the registration site for signing up to participate in the year's Christmas Bird Count activities.  CBCs are a 113 year-old tradition in surveying early winter bird populations throughout the US, Canada and now as far south as northern Latin America.  It is a way to join in with about 75,000 other birders in a really fun activity.  I know that once I started doing CBCs I got totally hooked to the point that I have done more than 100 counts over the years.

Go to this NAS website http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count to initiate the sign-up process.  CBC are held during the 22 day period from December 14th to January 5th, so sign up for more than one.  (If you are really inspired [aka, crazy], you can compete with Doug Kibbe and me as we try to hit the double-digit count level!)

CBC Compilers please select a count date as soon as possible to help participants with signing up.
