[cobirds] Signs of winter..., Boulder County

CObirders,
We saw our first Am. Tree Sparrows and a juvenile Northern Shrike while being serenaded by Am. Pipits at Sawhill Ponds this morning just after sunrise.

[cobirds] Louisiana waterfowl?

Hello! I hope asking about non-Colorado birds is okay. If not, my apologies!!

I'm currently visiting family in NW Louisiana (otherwise known as East Texas). Went out to the wildlife refuge today and spotted tons of these black waterfowl swimming with the pelicans. I'm having a hard time identifying them. Their bills seem to be black, which I think rules out double-breasted cormorants? But they seem to be completely black (or nearly so) with rather long bills, which seems to rule out everything else my app is showing me. Any thoughts?

• Rough-legged Hawk (same fella as last week, same area)
• Others: Northern Shrike, Pronghorn, Coyote, Common Raven, Ducks and Geese at Crom Lake

Sunday at Frederick Recreation Area ...

• Pacific Loon
• Common Loon
• Black Scoter
• Snow Goose - 7
• About 20 other "water" species ... full of birds

at Woods Lake ...

• Covered in Canada and Cackling Goose, and Mallard
  
• Snow Goose - 14+
  
• Greater White-fronted Goose - 3

Still have Pine Siskin showing up in yard.

Someone in my general neighborhood just posted about a dead Mallard found under

his vehicle in his driveway.  Hope this isn't a bird epidemic.

I agree with Nathan. In addition to the thin, serrated bill and bushy crest, note the clean white chin and white wing patches, which are all consistent marks for female Hooded Merganser.

[cobirds] Mexican Duck-Fossil Creek Reservoir (Swede Lake side)-Larimer

All,

There is duck that looks quite good for a full-on Mexican Duck in the Southeast arm of Fossil Creek Reservoir a.k.a Swede Lake.  I am reporting it as such at the present time. The bird has been present since at least Friday.  Several of us have gotten pics of the bird ranging from decent to not so decent.  But there is some question as to whether this bird is pure Mexican or could possibly be a Mallard x American Black Duck.  I have attached my ebird checklist here for people to review the photos I have.  This bird show absolutely no white on the tail or undertail coverts.  No curled tail feathers.  There are white margins around the speculum (eliminating pure American Black Duck).  No black spot at gape to eliminate Mottled.   The short views I got of the speculum showed turquoisy-blue to dark blue. The color depended on the angle of the light and I at best saw it for a couple seconds three times.  If anyone out there fancies themselves a Mexican Duck or Mallard x American Black Duck expert, please take a look.  This bird does not remind me of the Black Ducks I grew up watching in PA.  But, the only crosses I've seen of Mallard/ABDUs the birds were showing much green on their heads.  This bird may be a back-cross if it is a hybrid.  It also does not appear to be a Mallard x Mexican either.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Great close-up views of white winged scoter in Zeigler Pond, near the entrance to the Environmental Learning Center, corner of Ziegler and Environmental, Fort Collins. Lots of other waterfowl as well.
