This morning a friend of mine reported seeing a pair of adult Sandhill Cranes with two colts (chicks) in the irrigated fields east of Ridgway. I headed out to see for myself and found all four cranes north of County Road 12. The colts appeared to be only a couple of weeks old and are nowhere near old enough to fly so a first breeding record as far as I know. Adult cranes have been seen in the same area the past two summers, but no colts were reported.Don MarshRidgway, CO
