[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 18. 2023

A busier and quite interesting day, with eight returns, two unusual species, and constantly changing weather.  Closed for 30 minutes at 8:30 for rain, then had some sun, then barely got to our cars at the end of the morning before it started to pour.

Unusual species - A second year female Lazuli Bunting and same age Northern Parula (the 4th ever caught at the station).

Interesting return - My favorite return was an American Redstart who I think of as the patriarch of the small gang of breeding AMREs at Chatfield.  He was first caught as a second year bird on 5/14/17 and has been caught most years since (as well as being photographed in the field by Rob Raker).  As far as we know, he is the oldest of the group.

Here's the breakdown of the 42 new, 8 returns (there were also 11 birds that were caught for the 2nd (or third.....) time this season):

Dusky Flycatcher 1
Warbling Vireo 1 (FOS)
House Wren 2
American Robin 1
Gray Catbird 11 new, 1 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021
Northern Parula 1
Yellow Warbler 9 new, 2 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021
American Redstart 1 new, 1 banded 2017 (FOS)
Common Yellowthroat 3
Yellow-breasted Chat 4 new, 1 banded 2022
Brewer's Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 4
Lazuli Bunting 1
Red-winged Blackbird 1 banded 2022
Bullock's Oriole 2

We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May.  Denver Audubon has scheduled one-hour time slots at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 for visitors on weekends; visit here to register.  (I believe many time slots are already sold out, so register soon if you would like to visit.)
