Re: [cobirds] nesting red-bellied woodpecker?

With due respect to ebird and all who use it rather than reference books, I would suggest that one consult the Colorado breeding bird atlas if you are wondering about the breeding status and nesting distribution on any species in the state.

Ron,

Red-bellied Woodpeckers nest along the eastern border of Colorado.  They can be found in reasonable numbers in the NE (Tamarack Ranch), E (Bonny Res), and the SE (Lamar and other places).  See the concentrations in these areas on the ebird map at   https://ebird.org/species/rebwoo

No-one has seen a male bird in the Walden Ponds area this winter (as far as I am aware), so I think it's a bit early to presume the female is nesting there.

A friend of mine has seen and photographed the female red-bellied woodpecker at Walden Ponds twice in the past couple days. Other birders have reported it on ebird as well. He has seen it go into a tree cavity.
I guess I need some education on this finding. One web source said that they don't nest in CO. Certainly the range map doesn't reflect that.
Does a confirmed nesting of a species in a state change it's designation in some way?
