Official CounterAjit Antony
Observers: Andrew Jensen, Gregg Goodrich, Liza Antony, Sammy Korengut

Visitors:
8 hikers wandered around the hike watch area for the view. Very glad to have Gregg Goodrich for most of the day, Shmuel (Sammy) Korengut for the morning and Andrew Jensen in the afternoon, whom together with Liza were all very sharp-eyed and very helpful finding raptors. Tim Patanode who is new to birdwatching and a DFO member.

Weather:
Light then moderate winds from the ESE>E, cool, low and increasing humidity, minimal cloud cover gradually increasing to 40%, good visibility 24 km. The trail was completely dry.

Raptor Observations:
The few raptors we had were far and extremely high â€" found only by binocular scanning. 2 RT were over the Western Ridge very very far, the FH was halfway between overhead and West very high, as was the RT. In the 1400-1500 hrs we had 3 sightings of a distant adult GE at different times around Mount Morrison â€" probably the same one, and later another distant GE which turned out to be a juvenile on a 'scope view. Non-migrant raptors: RT 4 including a beautiful dark morph adult which flew south directly over the watch.

Non-raptor Observations:
3 paragliders. Common Raven 10, American Crow 12, Townsend's Solitaire 1, Black-capped Chickadee 1, Black-billed Magpie 2, Downy Woodpecker 1, Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay 1, American Robin 2.

Predictions:
There is a prediction for freezing rain 2-4 AM, so wear your crampons or other stabilizing footgear for your safety.

Site Description
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawk watch in Colorado and is the
best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Hawk watchers may
see 17 species of migrating raptors; and it is an excellent site to see rare
dark morph buteos including Broad-winged hawk, Swainson’s hawk, Ferruginous
hawk, Rough-legged hawk and Red-tailed Hawk. Other raptors we see include Golden
and Bald Eagles, Northern harrier, Osprey, Peregrine Falcons, Prairie Falcons,
Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels, Merlin, and Turkey
Vultures. Northern Goshawk is uncommon but also counted each season. Non-raptor
species include Rock Wren, Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane,
White-throated Swift, American White Pelican, and Dusky Grouse. Birders of any
skill level are always welcome. The hawk watch at Dinosaur Ridge is staffed by a
Hawk Counter and volunteers from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM from March 1st to May 14th,
weather permitting.

Directions to site:
From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left
into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow hawk watch signs from the
southwest end of the parking lot to the hawk watch site. The hike starts heading
east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side
of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, and walk to
the flat area at the crest of the ridge. (Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain:
259 feet)
