Re: [cobirds] Odd goldeneye on S Platte south of 88th (Adams) 1/9

Hi all -

That looks like a Bufflehead x Common Goldeneye hybrid.

See:

Lots of photos of similar looking critters in eBird on the Macaulay Library:

Cool bird.

Good birding,

I saw and photographed the bird on Jan. 1 after the Denver Urban Count. I thought it looked like either an aberrant bufflehead or a buffie hybrid of some sort.

Hi Everyone,

Today 1/9, visiting friend Rebecca Van Dyke and I walked the South Platte Trail from 88th Ave to 74th Ave. We found one male Barrow's Goldeneye with a crowd of other goldeneyes, and we found an odd goldeneye with a big splotch of white on its face. Rebecca took pictures,  see attached. Wasn't sure if Common Goldeneye x Bufflehead was a possibility or if this was some known aberrant plumage. Head iridescence was green but hard to see. Has anyone else seen such a thing?
