[cobirds] Loveland CBC summary

The Loveland Christmas Bird Count was held on January 1, starting the New Year off right!

  • We reported 99 species on count day, three more during count week (Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Eastern Phoebe). We had 81 volunteers out walking/hiking/driving/watching, including feeder watchers.
  • All-time high counts were recorded for Cassin's Finches (233), Evening Grosbeaks (97), Townsend's Solitaires (137), and Pinyon Jays (66).  We usually get a few of the finches; we had not reported a single Evening Grosbeak or Pinyon Jay since 2018.
  • We had 81 Bohemian Waxwings, but not the high by a long shot. In 2008 we had 1390 Bohemian Waxwings, and we haven't recorded a single one since on a CBC.
  • We had 3 Rusty Blackbirds; a few were previously recorded in 2011.
  • This was NOT a high count for American Robins. The all-time high was 2518 in 2020. Our total this year was 1970.
  • New birds to our CBC this year were Pacific Loon and Eastern Phoebe, making our total species count over the last 23 years 177.
  • We had ZERO Killdeers, unusual.
