[cobirds] Common Nighthawks - Arapahoe

The last two late afternoons / early evenings (approx. 6:30 - 7:00 PM) have brought flights of Common Nighthawks over my Centennial home and neighborhood. Some appear migrating southward; others appear to be feeding in the neighborhood.

Two nights ago, I saw about 20 of the birds, in two separate flocks: one of about six and one of about a dozen, give or take. I relocated about four of the birds feeding fairly low over side roads near the High Line Canal Trail.

Last night, it was just three or four birds flying eastish.

For metro area birders hoping to spot these birds before they leave the state, most of my sightings this summer have been 30-90 minutes before sunset, confounding our sense of them as dawn / dusk birds. I've seen a single crepuscular bird -- flying away from me, as I biked the High Line Canal Trail a few weeks ago.

Unrelated -- yesterday evening, a little before sunset, agastaches were filled with White-lined Sphinx moths (about a half dozen) and two hummingbirds who seemed to do the impossible: tolerate each other as they fed in a single plant. It was quite remarkable. Some of the moths will make these absurd, wide looping flights around the plants and me when I "flush" them from their feeding activity.
